Ramarathon will move the 2026 race date to accommodate Oscars

It is reported that next year's Los Angeles Marathon and the Oscar were booked twice on March 15, with organizers of both events causing headaches, but a solution was reached on Thursday and the marathon also agreed to change the date.

According to a statement issued by the Los Angeles Marathon and Film Arts and Sciences College, the 98th Academy of Oscars will be held as originally scheduled. The McCourt Foundation, which organizes the marathon, will announce a new parade date for the race in the coming days.

In return, in the coming years, it will commemorate the tradition of marathons, which hosts the competition on the third Sunday in March. The two organizations established an agreement with the assistance of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and agreed to work together to “benefit the Greater Los Angeles community” to promote each other’s activities, the statement said.

McCourt Foundation chief operating officer Murphy Reinschreiber told The Times that it was logically impossible to hold both events on the same day.

The Oscars are located at the Dolby Theatre on Hollywood Avenue, along the marathon route. He said it was not feasible that thousands of runners and audiences could pass the theater and then clean up the area and prepare for a red carpet event in a few hours. Both events also require a lot of road closures, law enforcement, and broadcast by KTLA.

The Los Angeles Marathon typically involves 25,000 runners, thousands of volunteers, medical staff, law enforcement officers and city workers.

The McCourt Foundation announced the 2026 marathon date on March 15 this year. Two days later, the college issued a press release announcing that the 2026 Oscars were scheduled to take place on March 15.

Reinschreiber drove home after cleaning up this year's marathon and was eager to rest after learning about the double booking.

"It's confusing, and another thought that comes to my mind is that there isn't a day in this business," he said. "It's one thing."

A marathon is not an easy task. The event covers most cities, involving more than 25,000 runners, thousands of volunteers, medical staff, law enforcement and city workers.

“There are two main facilities – Dodger Stadium and Century City – that are connected by a real 26-mile stage, while the number of people, communities and businesses changing dates are incredible,” he said. “We will have to do a vital community awareness program.”

He said that due to the date changes, more than 5,000 people registered for the 2026 marathon and required a refund.

Although marathons usually take place on the third Sunday in March, there are exceptions.

In 2009, it was transferred to Memorial Day to reduce the interruption of the church on Sunday. According to community feedback, it was transferred to March of the following year. In 2016, it was held on February 14, and Sunday was in line with the US Olympic marathon trial. Then, in 2021, the incident was postponed to November due to the 19th pandemic.

Traditionally, Oscars have been more flexible in dating.
