Rafael Devers

Although the controversy may play for the Boston Red Sox in the coming weeks, he has been doing the best thing to refer to the designated hitter.

Devers' two home runs in the sixth inning at Seth Lugo were Boston's 3-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium on Sunday. Devers played 2-3 in the set to complete three series, in which he hit 12-7 (.583) and made six runs.

Red Sox DH also hit 3-2 with home runs and two RBIs on May 8, and shortly after, he told reporters he wouldn't move to first base given a late-season knee injury. He continued to criticize the team's front-end decisions and how to handle it since he was asked to move out of the third baseman after being asked to sign free agents from Alex Bregman.

At the beginning of the season, Dever struggled - starting with 15 strikeouts in 19-19 - which seemed to indicate that the move towards DH affected his hit. But he also worked on shoulder inflammation during spring training, causing the Red Sox to shut him out with eight games left last season. As a result, his swing mechanism and timing, especially high-leg kicks, were abandoned.

However, Devers' swing seems to be in place. Of course, it's a small sample size, but in May, Devers hit .459/.545/.676, with two doubles, two home runs, 12 RBIs and 7 walks. And he only hit seven times.

This is Devers' total of .280/.398/.490 in 2025, which basically matches his professional numbers in nine MLB seasons.

“He knows how to cancel noise,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said after Saturday’s game. "Obviously, the past few days have been a lot for all of us, but at the end of the day, like he said, 'All I know is playing baseball.'"

Devers' home run, and a solo in the fourth inning Wilyer Abreu, gave Lucas Giolito enough offense to earn his first win of the season.

Giolito is his third start since returning from a hamstring injury, with a future run and two hits in 6 2/3 innings with five strikeouts. That's better than he gave up six runs and 10 hits on his last outing. Last spring, Giolito missed the entire 2024 exercise after having an elbow surgery.

"Best mix, better command, fastball harder, 93, 94 mph, but I think it's a mix of the courts," Cora said through the Boston Herald.

Winning, Boston (22-20) trailed the New York Yankees (23-17), who also won the American League in the U.S. Eastern Conference on Sunday.
