April 30 - Some puzzles have been solved. Others still need to find solutions in the next few days.
The Metropolitan School’s regular baseball and softball season will end Saturday afternoon before the New Mexico Event Association announced playoff brackets on Sunday.
Reminder: When two teams (or even three) rank first in both sports, the team with a head-to-head difference advantage is the state’s automatic qualifiers. However, that doesn't necessarily mean they will be the higher seeds of the playoffs. NMAA seeds based on the overall resume, based on their standard points.
Here is how the local baseball area enters the weekend:
As usual, the most competitive regions of Class 5A will not be fully confirmed until the last few days.
Cleveland has a record of 7-2 and leads the league with half Rio Rancho (6-2), and the Storm won the first meeting as competitors are scheduled to meet for the second time in Rio Rancho on Friday. The Rams also visited Farmington on Saturday.
La Cueva in Zone 2-5A leads Eldorado and Sandia. The Bears need to beat the Bullfighters in Saturday's doubles to ensure a straight 2-5A title. (Note: Sandia beat La Cueva in the semifinals in late March, but confiscated the results later the same day due to breach of the number of ballot votes.)
Sandia can sweep La Cueva and win the area, but it's not that simple. The problem with the Bullfighters is that they were swept by Eldorado earlier this week. If Sandia wins twice, she can get a three-way tie first, and the Hawks are Saturday as well.
Rio Grande beat Los Lunas last Friday to a huge victory, with the Ravens having a chance to get a 5-5A automatic qualifying match on Wednesday if they beat West Mesa. Starting Wednesday, the Tigers scored 7-1 in 6-1 with Rio Grande. The Ravens have a differential decisive game on Los Lunas.
The two 4A-level areas of the Metropolitan area already have regular season champions, St. Pius locked first place in 5-4A, while Albuquerque Academy locked in 6-4A.
East Mountain was excellent in the regular season in the Class 3A, but the Timberwolves scored 14 straight wins at Roswell last weekend, falling to both ends of the New Mexico Military Academy at both ends of the 4-5/3A, 8-0 and 6-3, NMMI crossed East Mountain to stand out in the East Mountain.
NMMI wins the playoffs bid to win at least one game of its doubles match in Ruidoso. Dongshan ended with two matches against Boske School. NMMI and East Mountain both seem to line up next to the first round of the Class 3A playoffs.
Softball: Cibola in Zone 1-5A can win the regular season directly if she beats the last volcano vision on Friday. The Cougars led Piedra Vista with a game and swept the Panthers in the league. Piedra Vista ends with Farmington.
La Cueva was unbeaten in 2-5a (8-0), but the bears haven't. Sandia (6-1 in the region, waiting for Wednesday's game against Eldorado) can still catch up and may win La Cueva and win the region, but the Bullfighters will have to break the second-place Bears twice at home on Saturday to achieve that.
In 5-5A, Los Lunas ended the regular season. The Tigers lead 7-1 in the league. The Atrisco legacy is 6-1, ending with Albuquerque High School on Friday. If there is a tie first, Los Lunas and Jaguars have two separate games, and the Tigers have a differential advantage.
In the 4A, the Academy won the Bernalillo title on Tuesday with a 6-4A title. St. Asylum in 5-4a leads Beren through a match. The Sartres only need to beat the last high ground later this week to win the championship on their own.
