Maryland's state flower, the black-eyed Susan, is often worn and cited on Preakness bets. Since 1940, it has been awarded the winner of Preakness when it was awarded a blanket of yellow feather flowers when it was established as the official flower.
But because the dark-eyed Susan usually blooms in June, the blanket is made from the Vikings champion. Thousands of flowers make up the final product (See the above grab grey on last year's winner).
Apart from the black-eyed Susans’ blanket, Preakness has some other traditions that set it apart from other races of the Triple Crown.
Since 1909, horse and rider weather blades have been painted on the top of the old club replicas in the colors of the winning jockey silk after the race. It kept these colors until the second year.
Woodlawn Vases are also presented to the winning owners of Preakness Stakes every year. In 1983, it was worth $1 million, making it the most valuable trophy in the American sports. Although the real trophy is awarded at Pimlico every year, the winning owner retains a $30,000 copy. Before the Woodlawn vase is displayed at the Baltimore Museum of Art.
