Vatican City - The inauguration of Pope Leo Xiv in St. Peter's Square and Basilica on Sunday morning was a symbolic ceremony connected to the special missions of Peter, the apostle of Jesus and his as head of the Catholic Church.
No new roles are given - the Pope is already the head of the Vatican and the head of faith, accounting for about 1.4 billion Catholics around the world, and thousands are expected to gather in the square with government representatives.
However, Leo will gain his tenet, “pallium” and two key signs of the fisherman, which marks his role as Peter’s successor.
It's about their knowledge, and more rituals filled with ancient language and biblical references in solemn liturgy - after Leo's spin on the square of Popemobile.
In most places, it is a celebration of the Eucharist, just like any Sunday Mass held in Catholic Churches around the world.
There will be prayers, music, New Testament readings, a humor and exchange, all in the usual order. But even in some typical aspects, symbolism is intertwined.
For example, the gospel passage will focus on Jesus’ responsibility as a church shepherd – the first public statement of his election day mentioned Leo.
It will be announced first in Latin and then in Greek. Pastor Giuseppe Midili, a professor and consultant at the Vatican Liturgy Office, said that as the main language of the new churches 2,000 years ago, today they mean "the church attempts to reach everyone" and become universal.
The Vatican said that in a more personal way, on the outdoor altar, there will be an image of a good lawyer's mother - Mary's idol comes from a shelter in a small village outside Rome, served by the religious order of Leo, Augustines.
The most important moment will be in front of homosexuality, when the Cardinal gave Leo and his fisherman ring.
Pallium is a narrow stolen pants with two pendants worn on the shoulders, decorated with a cross representing Jesus’ wounds. It is made of white wool, and in the process of elaboration the lamb is blessed before it is cut, like the similar costume given by the Archbishop in his tenure.
Midili said: "It is the symbolic meaning of the Good Shepherd.
"Pastor" refers to the Latin shepherd, and the scriptures usually refer to the good shepherd who gave his life to his flock, referring to the crucified Jesus and Peter's crucified. Leo will be obtained from Cardinal Dominique Mamberti, who told the world the name of the new pope on May 8.
The fisherman's ring reminds of the gospel passage, and Jesus appeared in the apostles after his resurrection because they spent a night fishing without fishing. He told Peter to throw in a specific place - the Nets and many big fish were nervous, some of the apostles then shared with Jesus at breakfast by the lake.
An image with a net by Peter, representing the church's mission of evangelism and its unity, and is engraved on the ring next to the Pope's name. When the Pope dies, the ring passes over, so it is no longer used as a seal for the papal documents. Cardinal Luis Tagle of the Philippines, widely regarded as a pope contender, will show the ring to Leo.
The celebration begins with the ring and pallium both taken from the St. Peter’s Tomb Church below the cathedral, with the Pope’s prayer accompanied by the Oriental Ceremony of the Catholic Church – to the altar of St. Peter’s Square.
Following the dedication of these two badges, a delegation representing different roles in the church, from cardinals to faithful faithfulness, including married couples, will greet Leo with a “ritual of obedience” of “ritual of obedience”, symbolizing the church’s turn toward new staff to follow his guidance.
After the Mass, Leo will pay tribute to government representatives, royal and religious delegations.
U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are both Catholics who often tied to the pope's government with Pope Francis, planning to attend the Mass of the First American Pope.
According to the Vatican, the statements at Mass include Italian President Sergio Mattarella, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Peruvian President Dina Boluarte, and are also expected to have citizenship in Massachusetts, including Italian President Sergio Mattarella, Leo, and have served as missionary and Bishop for many years there.
The presidents of the two countries mentioned by Leo in his first Sunday greetings are also on the list - Isaac Herzog of Israel and Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine.
The Spanish king and queen plan to participate with other royal families in Europe and the Gulf Kingdom, including Sheikh bin bin Saxophone Sassimi of the United Arab Emirates.
