Pope Leo XIV's blessing on the first Sunday called for peace in Ukraine and Gaza: "Never End of War"

As the bells of St. Peter's Basilica rang, the crowd was filled with parade bands of special Jubilee weekends bursting out in cheers and music.

Angela Gentile arrived at the square three hours in advance. The Cardinal elected another non-Italian pope, she said she was happy that Leo came to the central balcony of the cathedral so the crowd could see him face to face. “What is good for the Holy Spirit is useful to me,” she said. “I have trust.”

More than 50 pilgrims from Houston, Texas waving three large American flags in the square. They made a pre-planned holy year pilgrimage in Rome and said they were proud to be part of this historic moment.

"Words cannot express my admiration and gratitude for God," said Pastor Dominic Engel, who leads a Vietnamese-American group. He said he hopes the pope is happy to see the stars and stripes, and also the Peruvian flag and all other countries, showing the universality of the church.

Leo's Peru and Chicago roots

Former Robert Prevost Leo spent most of his priestly life in Peru, which he recalled on Thursday night, providing special greetings to his former parish in the Spanish language of Chiclayo.

Peru's Bertha Santander came five hours in advance to unveil her Peruvian flag on the square, recalling that night when Leo first appeared, cheers erupted.

"It's such a bliss," she said. The Peruvian woman said, "When I heard the last name I started crying, I was crying when he greeted him in Spanish."

Earlier Sunday, Leo and his Augustine ordered Alejandro to celebrate a private mass near St. Peter's tomb. The Mass takes place in the grottoes below St. Peter’s Basilica, the traditional cemetery of St. Peter, the apostle, considered the first pope.

Louis said he had no chance to talk to his younger brother to congratulate him, but he knew he was starting a new life.
