Pope Leo says the church should be a "beacon" to reach an area that suffered "lack of faith" in his first mass on Friday

The new Pope Leo XIV calls on the Catholic Church to "fight desperately" against his lack of faith in the first mass in the Vatican.

On Friday, the day after he was elected as the first American leader of the Catholic Church, he warned that people are coming to “money, money, success, power or pleasure” for security rather than churches.

Pope Leo also called on the Cardinal to expand missionary outreach.

The promotion of the Chicago-born Robert Francis Prevost has been widely celebrated by 1.4 billion days of Catholicism around the world, especially in Peru’s outbreak of joy, where he has been stationed for 20 years in his American homeland.

In his speech, the new pope said that he was elected as a "faithful executive" of the church and directed it as a "beacon" to areas suffering from "lack of faith."

He said in Italian: “The lack of faith is often accompanied by loss of meaning in life, neglect of compassion, shocking behaviors that violate human dignity, family crises, and many other wounds that plague our society.”

Pope Leo, wearing a white robe and trimmed in gold, spoke to the Bishop at the seat address of the Sistine Church in the Vatican government.

On Thursday night, when the new Pope Leo Xiv introduced Prevost to the world, it attracted cheers from the crowd gathered in St Peter's Square.

He appeared on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, and his first words to thousands of believers outlined the vision of a "missionary" church that "built bridges, which have dialogue, which is always open."

He responded to his predecessor, the late Pope Francis, calling for peace.

"Through dialogue, meeting, helping each other, building bridges to each other, becoming one, always peace," he said.

The world leaders are eager to congratulate Prevost on his election and promise to work with him to solve global problems. US President Donald Trump calls it an "attention" to have the first American pope.

Prevost also has Peruvian citizenship, becoming Archbishop only in 2023 and then becoming Archbishop. He was elected leader after just two short days of his vote at a secret meeting two weeks after Francis' death.

He was seen as aligning with the late Pope, who was regarded as a progressive champion for human rights and the poor and was known for his charming style that attempted to make the Catholic Church even more outward.

Vatican observers point out that Francis appears to have brought Prefoster to Rome in recent years, perhaps making him a potential successor.

Pope Leo's upcoming speeches include a prayer of Regina Coeli at noon Sunday and a Monday press conference with journalists to learn about the direction he intends to lead the church and what kind of pope he will become.
