Poll shows majority say Biden will be forgotten when president bids farewell to country

More than half of Americans say President Joe Biden will be viewed as below average or one of the worst presidents in U.S. history, a new national poll shows.

In a Marist poll released Wednesday, more than a third of adults nationwide said Biden would be viewed as one of the worst presidents in U.S. history, while another 19% said he would be viewed as for a below-average president.

Twenty-eight percent of participants said Biden's legacy would be viewed as average, and 19% said he would be viewed as above average or one of the best presidents in U.S. history.

The poll was released hours before the president delivered his farewell address to the nation, just days before the end of Biden's term and President-elect Trump will succeed him in the White House.

In his Oval Office speech, Biden will likely aim to solidify his legacy as a president who pushed for political stability at home while strengthening U.S. leadership abroad as a leader who led The country emerges from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic with a strong focus on infrastructure and clean energy.

The Marist poll is the second consecutive national survey to suggest history may not be kind to Biden.

According to a USA TODAY/Suffolk University survey released Tuesday, 44% of voters nationwide said history will judge Biden as a failed president, while another 27% said he will be judged as a failed president. A fair president.

Twenty-one percent of respondents said history will view Biden as a good president, while only 5% said he will be viewed as a great president.

The president's single term in the White House will end next Monday (January 20), when Trump will become Biden's successor.

However, 44% also said Trump will be remembered by history as a failed president, according to the USA Today/Suffolk University poll.

One-fifth said Trump would be viewed as a great president, 19% said well and 27% said he would be viewed as a fair president.

Most Americans say how they would view Biden's presidency

As the president leaves the White House, a new Marist survey shows Biden with an approval rating of 42% and a disapproval rating of 50%. In the USA Today/Suffolk University poll, his approval/disapproval ratings were 43%-54%.

In Biden's first six months in the White House, his approval ratings have hovered in the mid-50s. However, the president's approval ratings began to slide in August 2021 amid criticism of Biden's handling of the unrest US withdraws troops from Afghanistan COVID-19 cases surged that summer, mostly among unvaccinated people.

The president's plummeting approval rating has also been driven by soaring inflation - which began in the summer of 2021 and remains a major economic worry for Americans - and a surge in migrants trying to enter the United States along the U.S. border. Southern border.

As Trump prepares to take office again, Marist polls show that ratings of him remain low, with 44% of Americans viewing him favorably and 49% viewing the incoming president unfavorably.

However, views of Trump's first term have risen since Trump convincingly defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the November presidential election. The vice president succeeded Biden in July as the Democratic Party's 2024 standard-bearer after Biden dropped out of the race following a disastrous debate performance against Trump.

Polls also show Americans have high expectations for Trump on the economy.

The survey results highlight: "While many Americans believe the current economy is not working well for them, residents across the country have become more optimistic about their financial future."

The survey also shows Americans are divided over Trump's proposal to mass deport undocumented immigrants.

The Marist poll was conducted Jan. 7-9 and surveyed 1,387 adults nationwide. The overall sampling error of this survey is plus or minus 3.2 percentage points.
