LOS ANGELES - A man died after a car exploded in Palm Springs, California, and officials said it was "intentional act of violence."
Two law enforcement sources familiar with the investigation told NBC News that five people were injured. No disclosure of the nature and severity of the harm.
Palm Springs Police Chief Andy Mills said on Facebook that several buildings had been severely damaged, noting that the “explosion site” stretched out the neighborhood.
"It was a powerful explosion," said a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation.
The identity of the deceased and his identity involved in the explosion are not yet known. Mills said the incident seemed isolated.
Mills said the explosion occurred in 1199 of Dr. North India Canyon, according to Mills. The street is home to many medical institutions, including the Desert Regional Medical Center.
There is no information on motivation, including whether nearby fertility clinics are Being targeted.
The American Reproductive Center (ARC) appears to be a fertility clinic, saying on Facebook that a car exploded in a parking lot near its building. No one works in the center.
Mills urged residents to leave potential evidence and call police to report their reports. The city of Palm Springs said residents should stay away from the area to allow emergency personnel to complete the work.
The clinic said on social media that ARC's lab houses all eggs, embryos and reproductive materials, but has no damage.
"We are conducting a comprehensive safety check and confirm that our operations and sensitive medical areas are not affected by the explosion," Arc said.
Monday will be "fully operated," the clinic said.
The FBI's Los Angeles Bureau said on X that it is responding to the explosion, investigators, bomb technicians and on-site evidence response teams. Mills said the Palm Springs Police Department is working closely with the FBI.
The Los Angeles office of alcohol, tobacco, guns and explosives is assisting in the investigation, the agency said on X.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom has briefed the explosion, his office said.
She said on X.
“We are trying to learn more, but let me be clear: The Trump administration understands that women and mothers are the heartbeat of the United States,” Bondy said. “The violence against fertility clinics is unforgivable.”
Video posted on social media and verified by NBC News captures the power of the explosion. Several businesses blew the windows out and suffered other structural damage. Firefighters are seen dragging the hose into the building in the video.
Images on social media also show smoke clouds rising from the area, appearing to surround the medical facility where the explosion occurred.
Palm Springs is about 110 miles east of Los Angeles.
