Police focus on abandoned Portuguese building searched by Madeleine McCann | Madeleine McCann

Search Madeleine McCann has recovered Portugal with police, using excavators to clean up debris around an abandoned building, miles from the last appearance of British children in 2007.

On Wednesday, Portuguese and German authorities continued to focus on abandoned rural buildings a few miles from the resort of Praia da Luz.

A new search for Madeline began Tuesday, the 18-year-old missing from Praia da Luz, while her parents slept in a nearby room with her toddler twin siblings while her parents were out for supper.

Chainsaws and harsh sounds can be heard as investigators appear to continue cleaning up the bush area in Atalaia, a suburb of Praia da Luz.

Police used JCB to clear the ruins around a building and also appeared to have cleared another abandoned debris structure nearby. Bricks and rocks can be seen stacking outside the graffiti structure.

Personnel wear protective gear, including hard caps and masks, as they clean up vegetation around the structure.

Officers blocked journalists from approaching search areas that were blocked with police videotapes.

The search was conducted at the request of the German federal police, as the evidence they were looking for could suggest that it could be the suspect Christian Brückner, who was jailed for raping a 72-year-old woman in Praia da Luz in 2005.

Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, did not comment in the “Active Police Investigation,” said staff at the Madeleine campaign.

If there are no further charges, Bruckner will be released from prison in September.

Last October, Brückner was cleared by the German court of irrelevant sex crimes, which allegedly occurred in Portugal between 2000 and 2017.

About 30 German police officers, including forensic experts, are expected to continue until Friday with Portuguese police.

Metropolitan police said they were aware of the action, but British officers would not be present.

German investigators and Portuguese officers last searched in 2023 near the Arade reservoir dam, about 30 miles from Praia da Luz.

Brückner spent some time in the area between 2000 and 2017, having his own photos and videos near the reservoir.

A search was conducted in 2008 when Portuguese lawyer Marcos Aragao Correia paid a professional diver after he claimed he was beaten down by a criminal contact by Madeline's body.
