Pirates fans who fell from the 21-foot Clement wall to the right of Pittsburgh PNC Park have been identified because community leaders say he is "fighting for his life."
Officials said Kavan Markwood was seriously injured after falling from the stands and landing on warning tracks in Wednesday's Pirates smoke game.
"Some positive signs shared with me, he is responding, but he is fighting for his life now," South Allegheny School District principal David McDonald told KDKA on Thursday.
Markwood graduated from South Allegheny High School in 2022, a district spokesman confirmed Thursday.
A district spokesman said in a statement that Markwood had “had a lasting impact on the South Allegheny community” when she was a student.
Markwood played football for the Gladiator and was named a senior in the MVP team. He also received plenary honors. He continued to play football at Walsh University in Ohio before enrolling at Walsh University in West Virginia.
"Kavan is known for his resilience, strength and kindness," a spokesperson for the region said. "He is a friend of all people - some face challenges with courage and grace, and some of them."
McDonald's said Mark Wood was "a good, strong young man."
"If anyone can overcome this, it would be Kavan Markwood because he is a strong kid," he said. "He is a fighter. He proved that he has reached the point he is now in 21 years and we need to gather around Kavan."
Pittsburgh Public Safety said Thursday it saw the fall as "essential accident."
On Thursday, Pirates Chairman Bob Nutting issued a statement in which part said: "All of us were very sad and heartbroken after the horrible accident last night. It was one of the most difficult moments many of us have ever experienced."
Markwood fell after Buccaneers Andrew McCutchen reached RBI doubles at the bottom of the seventh inning on Wednesday. Mark Wood was taken to a hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment. He remained in a critical state on Thursday.
