Pirates fans fell 21 feet and remained in critical condition until the scene

Pittsburgh - Fans who fell from the 21-foot-high Clemente wall at PNC Park were still in critical condition Thursday morning during a game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night.

Pittsburgh Public Safety, including Pittsburgh Police and EMS, was released on Thursday to X, saying that “the incident was seen as a coincidence of nature.”

The man was identified as Kawan Markwood on Thursday, according to information provided by the Southern Allegheny School District. Regional workforce development coordinator Laura Thomson said in a statement that the region remains “former students and outstanding athletes” in its thoughts and prayers.

"We just want to give him the best. I hope he can get through it because he is the reason we are here. He is the reason we play the game. Show their support so that we can do what we love, partly because of him and the fans. So, I just pray that he is okay." Pirate outfielder Andrew McCutchen

Thomson said Markwood, a 2022 graduate, has had a lasting impact on the regional community as an athlete and a “character person.” She said Mark Wood was the MVP of the football team when he was in his senior year.

Mark Wood fell on the warning track in the right field when Buccaneers star Andrew McCutchen led Pittsburgh 4-3 in the seventh inning. Players began to waving for the medical staff frantically.

Both Pirates and Bears sports training staff and PNC staff tend toward Mankwood for about five minutes before evacuating it from the cart. He was taken to the Trauma Center at Allegheny General Hospital and stayed there Thursday.

Pittsburgh owner Bob Nutting said the club felt "deeply sad" and "really sad" about what he called a "terrible accident."

“In times like this, we must come together and support each other and keep him and his loved ones in our prayers,” Martin said in a statement. “We also want to thank and thank the first responders who were eager to pay attention to and provide him with compassionate care.”

Brian Warecki, vice president of Pirate Communications, said the railing along the Clement wall to the right was 3 feet (36 inches) higher than the building regulations required by 26 inches.

Fans sat in the front row of the Clement Wall on Thursday ahead of the series finale between the two teams.

McCutchen, who was selected for five-time All-Star and franchise icon, said Thursday that the team felt "destroyed" by what happened, adding that they prayed together after the game. When asked to describe his point of view on the sequence, McCheng refused, saying he tried not to consider it and was more focused on Markwood's health.

"We just hope he can do the best for him," McCarken said. "I hope he can do it because he is the reason we are here. He is the reason we play the game. Show their supporters so that we can do what we love, partly because of him and the fans. So, I just pray that he is okay."

Buccaneers manager Derek Shelton and Cubs manager Craig Counsell reminded the referee immediately after the game.

"Even if it's 350 feet or anywhere, I mean the fact of how it fell and then it was motionless as the game went on, I mean Craig saw it, I saw it. We were both there," Sheldon said. "I think the referee saw it because of the way it played. It was very unfortunate. It was an understatement."

Players on both teams can be seen praying while McCutchen holds a cross hanging from his neck while Markwood is taken away.

The game was paused for a few minutes while Markwood was receiving medical care, but there was no formal shutdown.

Police said medical staff will provide any medical updates with Markwood's family.
