Pinterest launches new tool with AI ramp strike

Pinterest said it will finally do something about the AI slope that goes beyond its platform.

After a growing number of complaints, the social networking and image pinboard website announced a plan Wednesday to start marking AI-generated and AI-decorated images. It will also introduce a new option that allows users to reduce the number of AI pins they see generated.

New features show how serious threat-generated AI is for platforms based on user-generated content, crowdsourcing and social sharing. AI technology makes it possible for bad actors to flood these platforms with fake images that drown the artificial content people see, thus devalue the overall experience. AI-generated pins and other low-quality AI content (commonly called "AI Slop") have created a strong backlash among Pinterest's loyal customer base.

Now, Pinterest says it will help users more easily determine what is and what is not.

When users click on the image pin in close-up, they see a "Modify" tab in the lower left corner. The company said it will analyze metadata of images to help determine what AI is, but has also developed its own classifier systems that will automatically detect “no obvious marks” of AI content.

According to the company, if the creator's content is wrongly marked, it can attract pinterest.

More importantly, Pinterest said it will give users more control over the AI content they see in the upcoming features.

When launched, users will be able to select “less” options in certain categories such as Beauty & Art, which are easily overwritten by AI content. It also extends this option to other categories over time.

If available, this option will be found in the three-dot menu in the lower right corner of the pin. The company explained in a blog post that clicking this feature will send signals to Pinterest's system to recommend to users with less AI content.

Pinterest doesn't say when the new control settings will be launched - it's just that it's coming.

For sites like Pinterest, it attracts users to browse and save ideal images in areas such as fashion, home decor, travel, art, recipes, DIY, beauty, parenting skills, and so on, so a lot of AI content can actually kill the site. Some users have declared the site dead due to the AI image that has taken over.

On Reddit, for example, users have been protesting for months on AI Slop encroachment on Pinterest and noting a huge boost in this low-value content. Whether browsing content, searching or looking at committee recommendations, AI images find their way across the site, they say. The media also documented that if AI has broken the platform or whether it can be fixed, the decline of the article is being considered.

Pinterest said it plans to introduce more tools to work based on AI in the coming months, adding that it still believes the AI generation can be inspiring when it is well thought out.

“When people encounter AI-generated content on Pinterest, we are empowering users to make smarter choices about what they see,” CTO Matt Madrigal said in a statement. “The AI Gen Content on Pinterest should enhance users’ ability to discover and take inspiration, and we are deliberately approaching this new landscape with a thoughtful new landscape that benefits everyone on Pinterest.”
