Philadelphia Rockies statue wearing redskins gear ahead of NFC Championship Game

The competition has been renewed.

Philadelphia will host the NFC Championship Game on Sunday between the visiting Washington Commanders.

Before the game, Philadelphia's famous Rockies statue wore gear representing the Commander's former identity as the Redskins.

The culprit is unknown.

In recent years, it has become a tradition during Big Eagle playoff games to dress up as statues in the opposing team's equipment. Every time it happens, the Eagles win.

In 2022, the statue wore New York Giants gear before the divisional round showdown with the Eagles. The Eagles won the game 38-7. The following week, the statue wore San Francisco 49ers gear before Nienas arrived in Philadelphia for the NFC Championship Game. The Eagles won 31-7.

When the Eagles won their first Super Bowl during the 2017 season, the statue was wearing the opposing team's gear.

The statue was in Vikings jerseys before that season's NFC Championship Game between the Eagles and Minnesota Vikings, which the Eagles won 38-7. A New England Patriots jersey was placed on the statue before the Super Bowl, where the Eagles defeated the Patriots 41-33 for their first Super Bowl championship.

The vandalism sprees have become so frequent that the Kansas City Chiefs, who are holding on to Travis Kelce, are begging their fan base not to wear the statue on any Chiefs gear ahead of the 2023 Super Bowl. The Chiefs won the game 38-35.

"Chief, don't touch the f--- rock memorial!" Kelce said on the podcast "New Heights" in February 2023.

"Don't do that and definitely don't be number 87 up there!"

Former Eagles center Jason Kelce, who played against Travis and the Chiefs in that game, theorized that the culprit was Eagles fans.

"I'll be honest," Jason Kelce said. "I think someone in Philadelphia is doing that right now."

"I don't think it's an opposing team right now. There's no opposing team that continues to do this. I firmly believe there's a Philly fan who puts these shirts on rock statues just to get everybody fired, and It works well.

"So, keep doing it. I promise. There's no way. Because it happens every game. The Giants did it. The 49ers did it. There might be a Chiefs jersey this week."

Now, Washington is up and about to break the trend.

It will be the first time the rivals have met in the conference championship game, a high point in recent decades as Washington has been unable to win in the postseason since the 1990s.

The 2024 season is Washington's first to win a playoff game since 2005 and the first since 1991 for a team to win the conference championship.
