For 40 years, the PGA has toured in Westchester specific periods, bringing the great men of the competition to Westchester Country Club.
The winners include Jack Nicklaus (1967, inauguration in 1972), Arnold Palmer (1971), Seve Ballesteros (1983, 1988), and Ernie Els (1996, 1997). Vijay Singh was Westchester's only three-time champion, winning trophys in 1993, 1995 and 2006. Sergio Garcia won the trophy here in 2001 and 2004.
Typically, the event is held in June, either for adjustments to the U.S. Open or a week after the Open. When it is a tweak, the fields are flushed. The field sometimes relaxes when it follows openness.
In 1990, Hale Irwin won the U.S. Open at the Medinah Country Club outside Chicago. Irwin became the oldest open ever at the age of 45, celebrating his 18th green hovering in Medinah, a high erosion of the crowd. When he won the game in Westchester the following week, he excited the crowd by repeating five fives around the age of 18.
Westchester's annual dates are under many names: Westchester Classics (1967-75), American Express Westchester Classics (1976-78), Manufacturer Hannover Westchester Classics (1979-89), Buick Classics (1990-2004), Barclays Classics (2005-06), Barclays (2007), Barclays (2007).
Yes, it was named after many names and then left. After the 2007 Barclays, the Classics (or no one who remembers it anymore), and Westchester lost his year date in Touring Golf. Its final title was Steve Stricker.
