One person's trash is another person's treasure, and one team's mess is another's wealth. At least, that's what the Dallas Cowboys have to hope for in the second round of this year's NFL draft. It's interesting because it's probably the exact same view of the New Orleans Saints' feeling in the winter about the head coach hiring.
Professional football focus analyst Trevor Sikkema believes that the Saints should be happy with poker when they are two quarters after the Cowboys.
Edge Donovan Ezeiruaku QB Tyler Shought
This draft pick exchange can be summed up as: I'm not big with Tyler Shoough, who is No. 133 on my big board and the Saints brought him to the No. 40 draft pick. Even if there is a quarterback position tax, this is certain.
The Saints could have left quarterback completely, especially on Donovan Ezeiruaku's board of directors, where the highest passes were sought after. He is one of the top 20 players on the PFF Big Board, and he earned a 90.7 PFF pass segment on 18.2% pass ticket in 2024.
The Cowboys aren't in a situation where Edge itself is currently in trouble and they're happy to get rid of the top demands they perceived, adding Ezeiruaku to a stable that includes double-digit sack artists Micah Parsons and Dante Fowler, and more recently second round matches Sam Williams and Marshawn Kneeland. While the latter two may not be suitable for new defense coordinator Matt Eberflus prefers the ideal prototype, the cowboys may easily wait in position and go in a different direction with their choice. But I think the talent is too good to pass on.
The situation is the flip of the scene played in January. The cowboys hope they show up in both ways.
Kellen Moore, then-Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator, hoped to return to Dallas to serve as Cowboys. Here he got his first coaching opportunity, coaching from QB to OC under Jason Garrett and working with Dak Prescott. However, the Cowboys chose Brian Schneiner's dementia, which allowed Moore to eventually become New Orleans' HC.
The former QB and first-time head coach apparently needed a franchise quarterback to lead the Saints back to the promised land, and if he felt that it was that guy, it was that guy, not the brink sprinter that provoked him. But if it's not that guy, nor beyond Carl, Ezeiruaku may end up experiencing early mistakes from Saints fans in the new regime.
