Palisades Charter High School, known for having multiple movies and TV shows filmed in its halls and exteriors, is looking for a temporary campus after 40 percent of its property was destroyed in the Palisades Fire.
Teachers and students were barred from the campus, according to an announcement from the school, indicating that a significant portion of the school remains accessible after the largest fire in Los Angeles history destroyed the campus. Superintendent Dr. Pam McGee wrote that the charter school's classroom building and gymnasium are in good condition, and the gymnasium, baseball field, stadium and aquatics center are all available.
Fires still burning in the region have led to the start of the semester being pushed back to January 21, when schools plan to offer online teaching when classes resume next week. As of Wednesday morning, the Palisades Fire was 19% contained and had spread to 23,713 acres, according to Cal Fire.
On Tuesday, school administration issued a press release announcing that it is currently looking for a temporary space to keep the school community together so that students can benefit from in-person learning and avoid any mental health issues that may arise with remote learning.
"Face-to-face learning is critical for their emotional and social development; without it, students may feel more isolated and anxious, making their recovery from the trauma of recent events more complicated." "We urgently seek help from the Los Angeles community to help secure temporary campuses or shared spaces to ensure our students can maintain a sense of normalcy and stability in their lives."
School administrators are looking for temporary classroom space or campuses with large indoor and outdoor spaces suitable for hosting students and teachers, according to the release. Their mission also includes support from local organizations that can assist with logistics and operations, as well as support from volunteers to help with "movement, set-up and coordination." Schools are also required to provide athletic practice areas near potential new learning environments.
For many movie buffs, the school has become an iconic representation of California or the average high school student, with some 3,000 students from more than 100 zip codes. This is the famous setting from Brian De Palma's horror classic, Carrieand Lindsay Lohan weird friday (2003) and the MTV hit teen wolf series. Notable alumni of the high school include Susanna Hoffs, Katey Sagal and Antonio Sabato Jr.
Meanwhile, local Spencer Pratt has also requested help for the area's elementary schools, posting his support for the school on Instagram this week and linking to an Amazon wish list for school teachers. He and his wife Heidi Montag have both appeared on MTV hillsone of the many who lost everything in the Palisades Fire.
