FX's latest series, Adultsis a party comedy that follows a group of people in their 20s to share a house in Queens. The tradition it follows Friends For obvious narrative reasons. Also, like Friendsits cast consists of (relatively) new young actors who are carefully selected from the comedy range (Standup, Improv, Improv, Sketch and Tiktok) and are then asked to perform chemistry from long-term friends. in the case of Adultsthe group is essentially the perfect stranger.
The show's creators Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw are themselves in their twenties, former Performance tonight The writer who worked with executive producer Nick Kroll brought the story (based on his own group of friends) to life. Actors - Lucy Freyer, Jack Innanen, Owen Thiele, Amita Rao and Malik Elassal - Comrade Showers for promoting the nurturing an environment that allows them to be best friends in a few weeks, but also being comfortable enough for each other and becoming bold enough to walk into most comedy (most comedy (most people’s opening scenes) public scenes involve driving on the way on the way with a public handheld). Group join thr Front Adults``Posted on a prank about their non-traditional icebreaker, the prank Nick Kroll played on everyone when he got the job, and whether linear TV remains the gold standard for Gen Z creatives.
Let's start with a little bit: Where is everyone when they find themselves getting the job?
Frell I was in my apartment and when I got a text from a producer, I was hanging out for fun time with a friend and said Nick Kroll wanted to talk to me on Zoom. I had two cocktails. I thought, should I do this now?
Elassal Lucy, have they faked you? We must reveal the forgery.
Frell Yes, they pretend they are actually doing another audition. They did the same for all of us. Nick is like, let's do improvisation and then in the context of the improvisation they told us, you get the job. I didn't want to think he was actually giving me a job, so I kept working.
Goodbye The improvisation setup is also vague, so I'm like he wants to spoil me? He's like, you're Issa, you're having an interview. I think, but what is my intention? Should she do it well?
Innanen OK, what type of boss do I have? Isa did take notes.
Till When Nick Kroll tries to give you work is the most interesting thing I have ever heard of, you write down notes.
Does anyone fall into depravity for forgery?
Elassal I've got the information I got from the manager so when they call and say oh we just need you to improvise Nick, I'm like...OK I'm confused about it. (Laughs) They said you got a job, I thought Really? I'm shy about it.
Will you be able to meet Nick during any audition process or is it the extra pressure these fake meetings on your first meeting?
Till I really don't remember. I was nervous in all the scaling callbacks - in one scaling callback I went to drink a glass of water and put a glass of glass. I mute as quickly as possible because they can no Hearing it breaks. Actually not, it scrolled.
Innanen Both of my callbacks were in a hotel room with zero windows.
Till My lover, where are you when the hotel has no windows? I'm very nervous.
Innanen I'm on a lot of frustrating shows. One is Pittsburgh. They don't want you to see it. Technically there is a window, but the windows are just looking at more in it.
Elassal Irving, where were you when you found out about work? I don't think I've heard this story.
Till I sat on the porch in the sun once. I received a text message saying that Nick Kroll wanted to meet. I called my agent and freaked out, and then, it was all good.
Did the nerves you described during the audition disappear when everyone first met and met?
Innanen Scream to the creators because we have a lot of organized fun when we shoot the pilots. We did it, too, Malik's room was like Sammy's house, so we spent Chiki there every night just by relying on all of our deepest, darkest secrets and drinking margaritas.
Frell We all immediately felt very satisfied with each other, and it felt like a nice safety blanket for the high pressure situation we were in: photographing a pilot, you don't know if it would be sent.
Elassal We incorporate ourselves into each other’s lives. We just tell each other everything.
Till We all sit in a circle in the Malik hotel room, Amita said, "Everyone tells a secret you never told anyone, and that will keep us from being bound for life." I was thinking, wait, I just met you. But then we did it, and now we all know our secret, it's a beautiful thing. And, Ben and Rebecca are our age, but they are incredible masters. Even when you go to their apartment, they have a cheese platter and they have a drink ready, which is perfect. They are like us for our camp consultants, organizing shopping days and bar crawling to make us connect. On the surface, this sounds like a forced one, but it does work, we have built now, we can’t live without each other. This is really this strange, sad thing. (laugh)
The show features a lot of avant-garde comedy; has anyone read something they are scared of for their characters?
Frell There are a lot of things I have to do on the show, like: OK, we really work hard. Like the sex scene with the teacher at the end of the fourth episode of school. Or the scene I did in the art gallery. A lot of it was that I had to embarrass myself, but in a very interesting way.
Till There is a scene in episode seven where Jack and I have a lot of fun. Its premise is that Issa hosts a girl who needs an abortion but cannot have an abortion in her state, so she comes to New York to get one. Issa was too busy so she handed the girl to Jack and me and I was very upset about this girl. Ben and Rebecca did this great thing, making them super annoying and annoying for the girl, so even though she went through this ordeal, it still rooted her in a very interesting way. I had a scene where I almost had to hit her. I read it and I was like, wait, I took a picture of a teenager who was having an abortion? But it was so fun to watch it.
Elassal Whenever there is something truly edgy, you will always be truly supported by writing.
Innanen The only thing that made me pause actually cut off. It's a scene, and when my schedule is scheduling, I'm like...oh. It's the scene where the boomer guy is around the corner, turning around and leaving, the microphone pointing at us. It was a fun day. Maybe it will be in the deleted scene.
Goodbye Since my first scene in episode 1 was a public masturbation scene, everything after that was OK and I could do it. But the day before shooting that scene, I was indeed upset about living up to the writing.
Elassal By the way, that was our first day.
Innanen I don't think I realize that you're a big swing for you when you're at the door.
Till FX gave us two weeks of Bond, but all we really needed was a public masturbation scene.
When everyone grows up, what is the choice for everyone’s party performance? What is your formativeness?
Elassal FriendsMy father once told me The whole family plot. return, Full house.
Innanen Friends and Workaholic Again, I don't know if this counts as a video party. Just like we are three burnout losers, just like us.
Till Mine is Sex and the city, certainly. I remember my mom watching it on HBO, sitting with her and her two friends, which changed my life. I want to be every character, but none of them.
Frell Are you four people Irving?
Till No!
Frell You are a Samantha-Carrie hybrid.
Till Actually, I love Carrie. Oh my god, I might be Carrie's sunshine. But Samantha rose.
Frell Actually, you're a little Miranda too.
Elassal If we are doing Friends Comparison, Anton Ross? Or Samir Ross?
Till Anton won't Friends, like. He is the person you don't meet. He works in the kitchen of a coffee shop.
This is your first starring role on a TV show, but you're all doing other creative work beforehand - stand-up comedy, podcast, Jack is a Tiktok star. Is it still the ultimate goal in online TV shows? Are your other creative efforts avenue on TV?
Goodbye I thought it was a golden ticket that was no longer accessible on TV. The sitcom seems to be outdated. I remember when my first agent signed me in Chicago, they asked me what my goal was. I'm a sketch and improvisation comedian, so ensemble works are my favorite. I was like, oh, in multiple character comedy, I was such a dream, but almost to say.
Till I think it's all our dream to be in the show. But for me, I think the biggest dream - imagine I start crying - is working with someone who makes sense to you and seeing a lifelong friendship. I'm cast The movie is called Theater Camp That's all my friends at summer camp, and when we do that, we keep saying that this will never happen, it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to grab and be fun with your friends. Even though FX is behind us, the feeling is still like that.
Frell Traditional movies and TV are still my favorite things, and becoming an actor is something I have always pursued. The five of us have different backgrounds, but at the end of the day, we are actors.
Innanen For me, these different paths are not mutually exclusive. I totally understand that some people will do digital content as stepping stones, but I think you can do it at the same time. One of the questions I've been having is, since you're on this show, have you finished the Tiktok video? No. I started doing this because I like to do it, so I will continue to do it while also putting a lot of effort into it. I think entertainment is currently exactly fully democratized, so you don't have to just be a tiktok-er or podcaster. You can really do anything.
Goodbye I think these other places are most useful for building your voice independent of larger machines. I kind of ask myself a question like you, Jack, like I'm going to go back to live sketches and improvisations on TV shows? But doing so helped me hone my sound and craftsmanship, and then I got to a place where I could make up the industry.
Till I have this feeling about podcasts. I'm talking to people in the industry who have longer than I do, so I know something about their world. I can also do an uninterrupted hour on the microphone. Then I can bring it into this work. But I don't think it's one or the other, and I would feel very lucky if I had only podcasts in my life and ended up being just podcasts.
Elassal Everyone here is such an artist. People will ask, do I still like standing? Or do more action? And none of them have my job. It's like my actual job is to be creative as much as I can, which will gradually fade away in all these different ways.
