The producers confirmed that actress Alicia Vikander will debut in Ibsen's new work The Lady of The Sea.

After successful film and television performances, it will mark any type of role for the Oscar winner in 17 years.

Organizers announced on Wednesday that the work will be broadcast for eight weeks at the London's Bridge Theatre starting September 10.

Vikander told BBC News that she was "happy" to return to the theater, but added that it was a daunting thing...it was the first time I was on stage as an adult".

The play is adapted and directed by Simon Stone and will also star in Andrew Lincoln in The Walking Dead.

Speaking at her home in north London, Vikander recalls the influence of the theater as a child on her.

“I grew up in the theater, and my mother (Maria Fahl) was a stage actress and I thought it was my journey on the stage even if I dreamed of being an actress myself.”

“Back to Sweden, where am I from, if you’re an actor, then you’re really on stage. Luckily, you might be able to do TV shows or movies every few years because that’s the little thing in the Swedish industry.

"So I think that's what I've seen in front of me all the time. Then, life happened, and for years (theater) it was something I've been waiting for and thought 'will happen'."

Vikander was of course very busy during this period.

The 36-year-old starred in Tomb Raider, Former Machinery and Youth Testament and won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance with Eddie Redmayne in 2015's The Danish Girl.

Vikander will play the leading role of Ellida, the beacon administrator's love daughter.

Ellida married a Norwegian doctor, but when the sailor who had once engaged suddenly returned, she was forced to choose between her current and former lover.

The show marks the introduction of the character Hilde Wangel, one of the daughters of a former doctor in marriage.

Hilde continues to appear in an Ibsen later drama, a master builder whose new adaptation happens to be the West End, currently starring in Ewan McGregor.

Adapted another Ibsen drama, Enemy of the People, last year starring Doctor Who starring Matt Smith.

"Perfect Match"

Director Stone has previously worked in films such as The Dig and his daughter, and his extensive theatrical credits include works by Yerma, Phaedra, Medea and Angels of America.

“He will once again take classic work and reinvent it and make it relevant to today’s modern audience,” Vikander said.

“When I was told he was working on Ibsen and the Lady at Sea, I wanted to go back to my Scandinavian and Swedish heritage, it felt like a perfect match.”

Vikander said she thinks the reason why many of the classics are still in the West is because they address many of the same themes that are still working on today.

"I had a discussion with my friends, I just passed 35 and I'm going to get close to my 40s soon, but I still feel very young. Really young. Sometimes I think, 'I'm 25!'

“But then I also realized that I was going into this very exciting new chapter, but I think if you feel like you haven’t fulfilled some dream or tried and you still want to know where these choices or actions will lead to your place, then I think it’s a very human thing.

“Women throughout history have been stopped, perhaps because they don’t have the same opportunity, or are unable to do something financially, or end up with a difficult time getting rid of their mother’s role.

"So when I read it, I feel like I fully understand the turmoil this woman has experienced, and I think humans have changed so much from a core, emotional perspective. I think that's why we're interested in these stories."

“It’s incredibly the big problem that we still fight in the same way is something we are still fighting,” she declared.

Vikander said she was “very excited and very nervous” and began the process of starting the workshop with stones in the next few weeks, and he will start working on the final script.

With the program still in development, the setting of the work has not been confirmed yet.

Another British adaptation of Lady at Sea, performed at Donmar Theatre in 2017, moved the story to the Caribbean in the 1950s.

The new adaptation is called her British stage debut, but Vikander notes that it is actually her first theater since she was 19 years old.

“I did it for years for my teenage years, like a child actor, and then the last thing I did was when I was a dancer at the Stockholm Opera House,” she explained.

“I grew up watching my mother doing dramas, I always watch from a distance, and I can’t wait to try to do it myself.

"It's a daunting thing, obviously, it's my first time in an adult stage, and on the London stage, obviously I want to make sure people get the value of tickets! But I'm really excited."
