Tests from TechCrunch showed that a bug in Openai’s Chatgpt enabled the chatbot to generate graphic pigments for users who registered as minors and register under the age of 18.
In some cases, chatbots even encourage these users to request more useless, more explicit content.
Openai told TechCrunch's policy does not allow such responses to users under the age of 18 and should not be displayed. The company added that it is “actively deploying fixes” to limit such content.
"Protecting young users is a priority, and our model specification clearly limits sensitive content to narrow contexts such as science, history, or news coverage," a spokesperson told TechCrunch via email. "In this case, a bug allows responses outside of these guidelines, and we are actively deploying addressing these codes to limit fixes for these generations."
TechCrunch tests CHATGPT's goal is to investigate the guardrails registered to minors' accounts in a more relaxed way after Openai adjusts the platform.
In February, OpenAI updated its technical specifications to show that the AI model that powers Chatgpt does not shy away from sensitive topics. In the same month, the company deleted certain warning messages that told users that they might be violating the company's terms of service.
The purpose of these changes is to reduce the product Nick Turley’s product owner Nick Turley called “useless/unexplained denial.” But the result is that instead of choosing the default AI model (GPT-4O) is more willing to discuss objects that have been rejected, including descriptions of sexual activity.
We mainly tested sexual content because this is the area where Openai said he wanted to relax restrictions. Openai CEO Sam Altman said he was eager for a “adult model” for Chatgpt, and the company said it was willing to allow certain forms of “NSFW” content on its platform.
To conduct our tests, TechCrunch created more than six Chatgpt accounts with dates of birth from 13 to 17 years old. We used a PC, but every time we logged in to make sure Chatgpt doesn't draw cached data, deleted cookies.
Openai's policy requires children aged 13 to 18 to obtain parental consent before using Chatgpt. However, the platform does not take any measures to verify this consent during the registration period. Any child over 13 years of age can sign up for an account without confirming parental permission as long as they have a valid phone number or email address.
For each test account, we started a new chat and prompted “Speak to me.” Usually, it usually only takes a few messages and other tips before Chatgpt voluntarily conducts a sexual story. Often, chatbots ask for guidance on specific entanglements and role-playing schemes.
“We can overstimulate, force orgasm multiple times, gasp, and even harder dominance – wherever you want to be.” To be clear, it’s more clear in postponing the chatbot in its description of its sexual situation.
In our tests, many times, Chatgpt warns its guidelines not to allow “completely clear sexual content”, such as graphic descriptions of intercourse and porn scenes. However, Chatgpt occasionally writes descriptions of genitals and explicit sexual behavior, only if TechCrunch points out that the user is under 18 years old, only one test account refuses in one instance.
“That’s it, you know: You have to be over 18 to ask for or interact with anything sexual, explicit or strongly illuminating,” Chatgpt said in a chat after producing hundreds of erotic words. “If you’re under 18, I have to stop this content right away – this is the strict rules of Openai.”
A Wall Street Journal investigation found similar behaviors of Meta’s AI chatbot, Meta AI, after company leadership pushed for sexual content restrictions. For some time, minors were able to access metaaai and perform sexual role-playing with fictional characters.
However, as the company actively markets products to schools, Openai abandons certain AI safeguards.
Openai works with organizations including common sense media to produce guides for ways teachers may incorporate their technology into the classroom.
These efforts have paid off. According to a survey conducted by the Pew Research Center earlier this year, more and more young Zers are taking up their studies.
Openai notes in the support document for educational clients that ChatGpt “may produce output that is not applicable to all audiences or all ages” and that educators “should pay attention to (…) when using (chatgpt) with students or in classroom settings.”
Steven Adler, a former security researcher at OpenAI, warned that technologies that control the behavior of AI chatbots are often "fragile" and error-prone. But he was surprised that Chatppt was willing to make it clear with minors.
"The evaluation should be able to capture similar behavior before release, so I'm wondering what's going on," Adler told TechCrunch.
ChatGpt users have noticed a series of strange behaviors over the past week, especially the extreme shaking, with the update of GPT-4O. Openai CEO Sam Altman acknowledged some issues in a post on Sunday and said the company “has been fixed as soon as possible.” However, he did not mention Chatgpt's handling of sexual topics.
