A Baldwin Park police officer was killed and another suspect was hospitalized after opening a fire in Baldwin Park, California on Saturday night.
The incident occurred before 7:15 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, in the 4200 block of Filhurst Avenue and Los Angeles Street in Baldwin Park.
Baldwin Park police were called to the area after learning of shooting and a man came down. Sometime after arrival, the suspect opened fire and the officer was injured.
"When they arrived, they were met by gunfire," Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said in a press conference early Sunday morning. "This call does indicate that there is a person shooting with a rifle and we are still trying to ... determine what that is."
Firefighters said an officer was taken to a nearby hospital by helicopter, while the second was transported by an ambulance. Both were taken to Los Angeles General Hospital, where one of the officers died.
He was confirmed Samuel Riveros, a nine-year veteran of the department, Sunday.
"He answered the shooting that opened fire to protect our residents in Baldwin Park. He and his other officers responded and, as the habit of any police officer or any sheriff's deputy, they always responded and caught fire," said Robert Lopez, Chief of the Baldwin Park Police Department. "That's what he did tonight. Sadly, he died."
Lopez said the officer was a "amazing person" and an avid Dodgers fan and skier.
The second official, known as Anthony Pimentel, is said to be in a stable condition and surrounded by his family. He was released from the hospital on Sunday morning.
“It is very tragic to have to address this,” Lopez said. “I ask you to pray that I ask the community to remember the officials and representatives who are there every day pushing black and white, which makes all our families, our residents and communities safe as well.”
Luna said the suspect had been detained, although he did not provide details about his location. He said the suspect was shot dead by police during the incident and was taken to the hospital for treatment. His condition is stable.
Another person was also found dead at the site where officers were sent on Saturday. They have not yet confirmed, but Sheriff Luna said they believe the suspect was also involved in the person's death.
The shooting was still active for hours, with dozens of officers, including some SWAT officers with two pandas, able to see guns outside some homes in the area. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department representatives are also taking over the investigation on the spot.
Dozens of marks of evidence can be seen throughout the night when police investigations continue.
Surveillance footage of a house in the area showed several officers driving into Filhurst Avenue with guns. In another video, multiple gunshots can be heard.
Baldwin Park is located east of Los Angeles.
