On Mother's Day, Second Lady Usha Vance shares her insights on her role and goals as a mom

First on Fox: As mothers across the country gather with family and friends to celebrate Mother’s Day 2025, Fox News Digital asked Second Lady Usha Vance about the meaning of the holiday and how she will spend special occasions.

Mrs. Vance shares her insights on the dual role of the Second Lady and the mother of the toddler.

“Balanced behavior today is sometimes much easier than when I worked full-time in the private sector because I have more control over my schedule and don’t feel like I’m not in much direction,” she told Fox News Digital.

“That is, raising children in the eyes of the public will bring new challenges,” she said.

“While I certainly miss work, I’m grateful that I have the time to make sure our family life is as normal and stable as possible.”

The outstanding litigant was Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and Judge Brett Kavanaugh when he served as the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

The second lady and her husband, Vice President JD Vance, have three children: Ivan (7), Vivek (5), and Mirabel (3).

The couple met at Yale Law School and they both graduated. They got married in 2014.

Mrs. Vance shares the different things she has learned from her over the years as she reflects on her mother, Lakshmi Chilukuri.

The second lady said: “My mom doesn’t give direct advice often, but I learned lessons from her role models in countless ways.”

“No matter how busy she is, one of her gifts as a parent always makes me feel full of attention and I work so hard to make my kids feel the same.”

Vances attended a military mom’s Mother’s Day celebration last Thursday, with First Lady Melania Trump hosted with President Donald Trump in recognition of the sacrifices of the service staff’s families.

"I shared early celebrations of Mother's Day with the military mothers at the White House," Mrs. Vance said.

“But on Sunday we’re going to have a quiet day with family hiking and desserts baked by JD.”

Fox News figures were told that the vice president and his children would make her a hazelnut brown butter cake.

As Mother's Day gifts pass, the second lady says she may receive surprises in advance.

“My kids made me gifts in preschool, but they were so excited to wait for Mother’s Day, so we opened it early.”

Mrs. Vance sat down with Fox News' Ainsley Earhardt last August and pointed out that her own parents were "very relaxed."
