Oldham Sports: Micky Mellon promotes the promotion of "Monster" Lolita

Oldham sports owner Micky Mellon said winning the Latics’ first promotion in 34 years will awaken his “club monster.”

Mellon's team scored two Quickfire goals in the second half of overtime to win the epic National League final against Southend on Sunday at Wembley.

This is the third promotion for the Scots as manager EFL - equal to John Still Life's record and is also the sixth place in his football career.

The 53-year-old said it would have an earthquake impact on the entire club.

Mellon told BBC Sport: "It was an incredible achievement to turn it and get the results from our position. It was a wonderful moment for us.

“This club is a monster. We are under a lot of pressure because we have a great family to support us – we need to rise.

“It’s a big difference for everything Oldham as a football club and we can now really build behind the scenes.

"It's big, it's awful to get us into (the league). Everything is changing right now for the club."

Oldham - In 1991, his final promotion came to top flight, with support from more than 20,000 travel fans in a record 52,115 crowd, Mellon said, suggesting that the gap between the National League and the EFL is narrower than ever.

He said: “There are some very large clubs in the national league that are allowed to stagnate.

"York should have automatically risen. You can't win this point (96), don't automatically rise. It should be three, three down. Teams like York and Southend will make the EFL better.

“I think the EFL has to hand over the olive tree branch to the struggling original members.

"I'm in the second league, there are some teams out there that aren't as ambitious or big as the National League. It has to change."

Mellon admits his club will fall behind preparations for next season – until two months – and expects his players to return to practice in just four weeks.

He said: "We're a lot of weeks behind when it comes to hiring. It's crazy. We're going to retrain in about four weeks. It's going to be hard, but we'll definitely take it."

“We need to sit down and arrange the right organization, but that’s not disappointed with what I have to do.

“We recruited a lot of boys like this because we believe if we go, we’ll be fine – we have a lot of league players out there.

“We’ve been doing some little pieces behind the scenes and we’ll bring them anyway, but it does open a little because a lot of people say ‘I want to join the league’ so maybe it can open up the hiring appeal and make it a better thing to try to make this club move forward.”
