Ohio Governor DeWine to select lieutenant governor to fill Vice President-elect J.D. Vance’s vacant seat

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine will announce Lt. Gov. Jon Husted on Friday as his choice to fill the Senate vacancy left by Vice President-elect J.D. Vance before he takes office on Monday, Fox News has learned.

The announcement will be made around 1 p.m.

Vance gave notice of his impending resignation to the Senate on January 9 and formally resigned the next day. He officially resigned 10 days before he and President-elect Trump were sworn in.

"To the people of Ohio, I am sincerely grateful for the privilege of representing you in the United States Senate. When I was elected to this office, I promised to never forget where I came from, and I make sure to live by that promise every day," Vance said in a statement said in a statement.

"The American people have given President Trump an undeniable mandate to put America first at home and abroad. Over the next four years, I will do everything in my power to help President Trump implement his Agenda. Together we will make America stronger, safer and more prosperous than ever before.”

After Vance resigned, Ohio's new Senator Bernie Moreno said in his own statement: "Ohio is extremely proud of Vance! He has brought great honor to our country, starting with the Marine Corps. , then in the U.S. Senate, and now as our 50th Vice President! I am so grateful for JD’s early and unwavering support in what has been a truly amazing journey for an outstanding man!”

Once the new senators are sworn in, the Republicans will officially have a 53-vote majority.

On Thursday, Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis announced his pick to succeed Florida Republican Sen. Marco Rubio. He chose Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody.

Moody cannot be sworn in until Rubio formally resigns, which he is expected to do after he is confirmed as secretary of state on Monday.
