Novak Djokovic experienced the lowest low, standing out from the French Open after tearing the meniscus on his right knee while tall and highest, winning Serbia's long-standing Olympic gold medal last year at Roland-Garros.

In addition to some first set disturbances to strong winds and wet weather, the 24-time main champion beat Mackie McDonald, 98th in the U.S. in the first round of the first round, with Court Philippe-Chatrier winning the first round of the court.

The 30-year-old Californian has played college tennis at UCLA and has competed in the fourth round of the Grand Slam Championship twice. "He can only do a lot of things. I don't even think he's playing the best tennis or the highest level. But if I push him to another angle, he'll lift it up."

One example: When McDonald's got his first breakpoint and won Love-40 3-2 in the second set, Djokovic brought up three innings, two-thirds, 120 mph (193 kph) Ace, a 123 mph ACE and 122 mph service champion.

Djokovic compiled 32 winners - 18 more than McDonald - with just 20 unmand errors in a game, and eventually played the lights, retractable roof closed.

"I'm a competitor, I lost the sting, but I'll remember playing Novak in that court," McDonald's said.

Before Djokovic turned 38 and won his 100th professional title last weekend, he walked into the game grounds and was determined by the stadium announcer for his full-throw trophy count, he won three games at the French Open, he won his Summer Olympic gold medal at the French Open, he won "In Paris" in Paris.

"I still remember the Olympics last year," Djokovic then said. "This is the last time I've been here. The mood is very strong."

A medal that means a lot to him?

"I don't have a medal. But there's a photo of the medal in my schoolbag." "This medal is with my father. My father likes the trophy more than I do, so I gave him mine."

Other winners include Alexander Zverev, third place, but 2021 U.S. Open champion Daniil Medvedev was 11th and lost to Cameron Norrie 7-5, 6-3, 4-6, 4-6, 1-6, 7-5 in nearly four hours.

Who plays on Wednesday at Roland-Garros? The second round begins on Day 4, with a schedule that includes defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and two-time finalist Casper Ruud.
