Jay Bhattacharya, director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), recently announced on Fox News that the institution closed its last internal Beagle lab on its NIH campus.
The news comes days after Elon Musk, head of the Government Efficiency Department (DOGE), will investigate funding for Beagle's experiment funding.
A report from the White Coat Waste (WCW) project details the history of the lab, allegedly pumping bacteria that cause pneumonia into the lungs of more than 2,000 bears, causing them to bleed and force them into deadly experiments.
After the announcement, WCW president and founder Anthony Bellotti praised President Donald Trump for ending the highly scrutinized project.

"Taxpayers and pet owners should not be forced to abuse payments for NIH's beagles," Belotti wrote in a statement. "We praise the president for reducing this wasted NIH spending and will continue to fight until we refund all dog labs at home and abroad. The solution is simple: Stop the money. Stop the crazy!"

After the report was released, 23 bipartisan lawmakers, including Rep. Nancy Mays (Rs.C.), sent a letter to Fauci about the heartbreaking experiment.
"Yesterday, I sent a letter about the cruel, taxpayer-funded experiment; debated before taking drugs and killing them," Mays wrote on X in October 2021.
Kathy Guillermo, senior vice president of Investigations at PETA Laboratory, told Fox News Digital on Sunday night that the organization was “happy” with the news of the NIH facility closure.
"We let the new NIH director know how important this step is to modern science, and we are particularly happy because these final experiments involve sepsis, which we have worked to end for several years. The sepsis experiment is a failure of animals."
Guillermo pointed out that PETA filed a lawsuit under the Biden administration to try to prevent the government from funding for more sepsis.

The Indiana-based company pleaded guilty in 2024, which ignored thousands of dogs in a breeding facility in Cumberland County, Virginia, and will be required to pay a fine of more than $35 million, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.
"We are very happy to see (at the NIH location) no longer using the (Envigo) Beagles used," Guillermo said. "We first exposed (Envigo) in a secret investigation that eventually led to the closure of the facility and released 4,000 more hounds to the good homes."

PETA is waiting for information about the condition of the dogs to be released and can be kept at home if they are in good shape, Guillermo said they are ready to help.
"Dr. Bhattacharya has made a wonderful start and there is still a lot of work to be done as animals are being tested nationwide, including beagles and other dogs," she said. "So we look forward to what happens next."
