“Talking to him and hearing him talked, it made me feel refreshed because he was always positive,” Run said on the Pivot Podcast. "He's very positive about everything. He's training. They're getting him training and something like that, so I'm like, 'When you come out man, I don't know if you'll have a chance.'

“I kept talking to him. They kept saying that several teams were willing to give him a chance.

Rugers was sentenced to more than three years in a Nevada prison for killing a woman in a fiery crash, drunk at a speed of up to 156 mph. The collision also killed the victim's dog and injured Rugers' fiancé. He apologized at the sentencing hearing. He pleaded guilty to the felony DUI, resulting in death and misdemeanor of vehicle manslaughter.

Jacobs said he should join Ruggs on his golf trip the night of the crash. He said he was “immediately” angry when he heard about the situation.

“And then, when I started to learn more about the story and how they should compete, I was like, ‘Who is he with?’ But he was with his family and I went to his house.
