Grimes-Newton Women's Track and Field Team was banned from participating in the Victory Column during Thursday's Little Hawkeye Conference.
But the Cardinal broke the 20-year-old record in the 4x200-meter relay, Lauren Clarke made the top ten in two sprints at Dallas Center-Grimes High School.
“It’s a tough meeting, and it’s expected to be fifth, but it’s definitely a good choice in fourth and 15 points with Pella Christian and Pella Christian and Pella Christian, which is likely to see some Class 2A state championships,” said Newton Principal Women’s Track and Field Coach Rachelle Tipton. "I feel like my record breaking, saying that this team took advantage of the weather and the competition, but that's what they do. They stepped up. Even if there were a few things that didn't have hope, we were in a positive mood, just like we were going to next week."
Newton scored 67.5 points on his fifth time. The Cardinals are better than Norwalk (54) and Oskaloosa (37) and trail Pella Christian (76) by 8.5 points.
Indiana won six victories and won the conference championship with 167 points. Despite not winning a single game, Pera (113) ranked second and Dallas center (93.5) ranked third. Pella Christian won seven games in Game 4.
The Hawks registered six game records, while DCG and Indiana set five and four new records respectively.
The Cardinals ranked second in two games. They released the best season and school recording time with Camryn Klein, Lola Rivera, Abby Bruce and Clarke, winning silver medals in the 4x200 relay. At that time, it is ranked ninth in the 3A level.
Tabitha McCormick, Chantelle Macvey, Stephanie Goos and Sonya Anderson set a school record of 1:45.98 in 2004.
"Once the 4x200 team hit 1:47 in mid-April, I told them that the school's record is absolutely feasible," Tipton said. "The group was excited, but also knew that the hands could be better and they could be faster.
“While it’s unlikely that it’s stand time, I’m happy to see (Rivera) and (Bruce) leave school records.”
Klein also opened the shuttle barrier relay and helped the Cardinals to third place at 1:08.94. The rest of the group includes Macy Lampe, Mack Sims and Tori White.
"Even though the shuttle was down, the hurdlers also had an exciting night, which should give them confidence," Tipton said.
Clarke ranked second in the career best period of 12.43 seconds and third in the career best 25.5. These eras ranked 12th and 9th respectively.
White (15.78) and the Sims (16.46 in Career Best) scored 3-5 in 100 obstacles, White (4-10) ranked fifth in high jump and Bella Winther (2:32.21) ranked sixth in 800.
Audrey Muckler (11:31.21) ranked sixth in the 3,000, Bruce ranked sixth in the long jump with a 15-foot leap, 7 1/4 inches, and Addie Hammerly (31-7) ranked sixth in the shot put.
notes: Indiana won the shuttle obstacle relay race with a 1-2 score in shot put, 100 obstacles and 400 obstacles. ... DCG was 1-2 in 800 and Pella Christian hit 1-2 in 200.
