When Marc Krickbaum, deputy attorney for special counsel Robert Hur, filed a memo on handwriting in Afghanistan in 2023, President Joe Biden said he did not “remember” his book’s ghostwriter Mark Zwonitzer, whose book’s ghostwriter “assures me, dad, dad, “he” just found all the categories.”
In a new audio file released by Axios on Friday, Biden said "I don't remember" and Krickbaum asked him about classification documents he shouldn't have after leaving the office during a second day interview in October 2023.
"You said, 'I just found all the categories downstairs, so you can imagine we were curious about what you meant you mean 'I just found all the categories downstairs."

"I don't remember," Biden replied. "And I shouldn't speculate, right?"
"Right," Biden's lawyer Bob Bauer inserted.
The former president murmured, "So, well, I don't remember, I just don't remember."

After explaining that he refers to a conversation with Zwonitzer about his handwritten memo for former President Barack Obama, Biden replied: "I probably did it. I don't remember, but my guess is I probably did it."
Then, leading to a comment of "sorted things downstairs", Zwonitzer asked Biden if he found any documents at home or if he told Zwonitzer to find any documents when he collaborated on the book together in 2017.
Biden tripped his words and replied, “No, the only thing I can remember is that I want to say clearly to him that I don’t want him to just hear what I said about Barack’s memo, even if it’s not the highest secret thing (unbelievable thing), I don’t, I don’t, I don’t want anything that mentioned.

He clarified that he was not confidential in the sense of classification, but that he did not want it to be included in the book of his son Beau.
They discussed boxes in the library, corridors and “the back of the garage,” and Biden pointed out that he didn’t know “all things in hell,” but that’s how well he knew about what was included.
"It's not like I'm looking for something, like I want to compile things. But, they pack up, what's it."

Biden administrator officials noted endurance issues in the months before the president’s tenure: Report
When the White House issued transcripts during his presidency, the audio of the interview was still in a parcel state, and some speculated that his mental state was the reason.
Hur's investigation concluded in 2024 and found that Biden should not be criminally charged for misconduct and the retention of confidential documents, which detail the military and foreign policies of Afghanistan and other countries, as well as other national security themes.

After Hull described the former president as "a sympathetic, kind, elderly, poor memory", Biden fired backwards and said, "I'm kind, I'm an old man, I know what I'm doing."
