Netflix chairman and co-founder Reed Hastings joins the board of AI-enabled company Anthropic, whose major investors include Amazon.
Anthropomorphism is a competitor of Openai. It was founded in 2021 and is a public welfare company. Leaders of all siblings (and former Openai employees) Dario Amodei and Daniela Amodei. The company said it is building "reliable, interpretable and channelable AI systems." Hastings was appointed to the Human Board by its Long-term Welfare Trust.
"The AI benefits of anthropomorphism are very optimistic for humans, but also very well aware of economic, social and security challenges," Hastings said in a statement. "I joined the Human Board because I believe in their approach to artificial intelligence development and help humans progress." Hastings also serves on the Microsoft Board of Directors, and has previously served on Facebook's board.
Earlier this year, Hastings presented a $50 million gift to his alma mater, Bowdoin College, to develop a research plan on artificial intelligence and humanity. The program, while developing an ethical framework for use, examines how AI will transform work, relationships and education, a question that “is closely aligned with Anthropic’s own research priorities.”
"He has a unique qualification for his impressive leadership experience, deep philanthropy work and commitment to addressing the social challenges of AI," said Anthropic's Long-term Welfare Trust (Buddy Shah).
In March, Anthropic announced that it had raised $3.5 billion in money and received a currency valuation of $61.5 billion. The funding round is led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, led by Bessemer Venture Partners, Cisco Investments, D1 Capital Partners, Fidelity Management & Research Co., General Catalyst, Jane Street, Menlo Ventures and Salesforce Ventures, among other new investors.
“Reed learned that technology companies are more than just the responsibility to build products,” said Daniela Amodei, anthropomorphic president. “Whether at Netflix or through his global health and education programs, his focus is on human impact, which makes him an ideal complement to our board of directors as we continue to build AI, not harm rather than harm.”
