Netflix to raise prices on standard and ad-supported streaming plans

Netflix is raising prices on most of its U.S. plans.

The streaming giant announced Tuesday that its standard ad-free plan will rise from $15.49 per month to $17.99. The cheaper ad-supported plan, recently launched in an effort to attract more subscribers, will rise from $6.99 to $7.99 per month.

Additionally, the monthly cost of the Netflix Premium plan will increase from $22.99 to $24.99.

The company reported fourth-quarter earnings on Tuesday and said it would also raise prices in Canada, Portugal and Argentina.

Consumers have faced multiple price increases in recent years for major streaming services, including Netflix and its competitors, including Disney's App and Warner Bros. Discovery's Max. To achieve profitability, streamers are increasingly turning to higher prices and ad-supported plans.

"When you ask for a price increase, you better make sure you have enough merchandise and engagement to support it," Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said on an investor call on Tuesday. He noted that upcoming dramas and movies will be released in 2019 and 2025.

During a conference call on Tuesday, co-CEO Greg Peters said recent price increases in international markets were "going well."

Netflix last raised the cost of its ad-free standard plan in 2022, while its premium plan last increased in 2023. Meanwhile, the company is discontinuing its cheapest basic ad-free option in 2023. While the plan was no longer available to new customers, Netflix did increase the cost of the plan later that year.

Netflix ditched its basic ad-free package shortly after launching cheaper ad-supported plans in November 2022 in response to slowing user growth at the time. In November, Netflix said its advertising program had reached 70 million monthly active users worldwide. This is the first time Netflix has adjusted the prices of its ad-supported plans.

The company has also been cracking down on password sharing to get more customers to pay for its services.

As part of this change, Netflix is giving subscribers the option to add "extra memberships" to their accounts. The streamer said Tuesday that the cost of additional memberships for the ad-free standard plan will rise from $7.99 to $8.99 per month. Additional memberships to ad-supported plans will not see price changes.

The crackdown appears to be paying off: Netflix reported on Tuesday that it added a record 19 million paying members in the fourth quarter, taking its subscriber base to more than 300 million.
