NBC News host asks top Democrats if they have a responsibility to be 'more candid' with Biden

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., was shown an old clip of himself during an interview on Sunday in which he declared President Biden the best candidate to run against President-elect Donald Trump people.

"What do you say to Americans who believe you and other top Democrats have misled them?" NBC's Kristen Welker on "The View" Jeffers asked after being played a clip of himself from February 2024, calling Biden "definitely the strongest candidate to run against the current president-elect."

"Well, Joe Biden was the sitting president at the time. He was the candidate at the time and I supported him at the time, which was the right thing to do because the sitting president made the decision that he was going to run away," Jeffries said in response to the video.

Jeffries added that he wants to look forward, not backward, and focus on delivering for Americans after Trump wins.

Welker pressed further, "Do you think it's your responsibility to be more candid about what you're seeing behind the scenes as it relates to President Biden?"

"What I see behind closed doors is a president working hard to deliver infrastructure for the American people, lower the high prices of life-saving prescription drugs, and bring domestic manufacturing jobs back to the United States of America," Jeffries responded.

The NBC News host took on New York Sen. Chuck Schumer in a similar vein, insisting in a video that concerns about Biden's mental acuity were "right-wing propaganda."

Schumer declared in February 2024: "His mental acuity is very good. Very good. As good as it has been in years. All the right-wing propaganda about his declining mental acuity is false."

Asked what he would tell Americans who feel they have been misled by top Democrats, Schumer said: "We're not. Let's look at President Biden. He has an amazing record. The legislation we've passed since Lyndon Lyndon ·One of the most important pieces of legislation since the Great Society, with a record 235 judges, Johnson was a patriot.”

Welker then asked Schumer if he was confident Biden would be re-elected.

"Well, I'm not going to speculate. Like I said, I think his record is outstanding and he's going to go down in history as a truly outstanding president," Schumer responded.
