In the offseason, the Boston Celtics may have to break their core because they will earn $500 million if no changes are made.
Some believe the Celtics could make a big change this summer as the team lost to the New York Knicks in the semifinals, and Jayson Tatum could miss the full time of the next season as he tore his right Achilles tendon in Game 4 against the Knicks.
Tatum is out of the way with the Celtics to become the second-generation team next season, and an NBA analyst proposes Boston to make a massive deal this summer with a franchise that won three titles.
Andy Bailey of Bleacher reports that Celtics trade Derrick White and Baylor Scheierman were given to Detroit Pistons, Jaden Ivey, the top 10 protected 2027 first-round first-round picks in 2027 and the top 5 protected 2029 first-round picks.
"The Pistons are ready to win, and White is closer to the scramble than Ivy," Bailey wrote. "He also proved his ability to play on the ball or on the ball throughout the Celtics. Both his and Cad Cunningham's roster can be offensive. White's defense will fit in with Detroit's firm attitude.
“The asking price seems to be high, but White is one of the best two-way players in the league with decent protection on draft picks, and Detroit has proven ready to start adding veterans.”
White will make $28.1 million next season. He made 76 appearances with the Celtics this season, averaging 16.4 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game, while shooting 44.2%, and 38.4% of the foul line from 3 and 83.9%.
The 30-year-old White averaged 18.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists in the 2025 playoffs, against the Orlando Magic and the Knicks. Colorado's product hits 46.3% overall, 38.5% outside the arc, and 86.1% free throw line.
“For the Celtics, it’s the asset base for future deals or brings potential to the team for a few years. Ivey is seven years younger than White,” Bailey wrote. “He showed great potential for the Pistons before suffering his own end-of-season injury in early 2024-25.”
White has played for the San Antonio Spurs and the Celtics. His career average is 13.0 points, 3.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists.
