Morgantown, University will play the battle it deserves in the District I Champions Softball Series

Morgan Town – Both teams are entering the week and are looking to qualify for the 2025 WVSSAC State softball game next week at Little Creek Park in South Charleston.

Morgan Town and the senior college softball team advance to this week’s AAAA District I Championship Series, where they will fight for the right to represent the district in state games.

The club part has started the season series. MHS won the first game 6-3 and the Hawks won the second game 8-5.

UHS has entered only three best championship series 21-5-1 since April 22.

"Our goal is to go out and play the games we played most of the season," UHS coach Mindy Parks said. "These players know each other so well that nothing really surprising between the two teams. We have been focusing on our plate approach and how to handle different situations to execute successfully."

UHS outsourced its opponents 219-59 this season and has a solid roster in all competition stages. Parks said one or two punches from Maddie Campbell and Sophia Lehosit in the pitching circle helped her team win the championship last season, which could once again become a factor.

"Sophia has been dealing with injuries for a while, but she has re-played an influential role," Parks said. "When she plays and feels good, when we have healthy pitchers like last year, it's a huge help to our team."

Olivia Masoner leads UHS with an average of 0.539, while Campbell, Lehosit and Liz Elza have averaged more than .400. Masoner and Campbell hit 82 times and 61 RBIs together.

They will face a challenge with MHS outstanding pitcher Maddie Wisman, who 14-4 in 125 innings and 147 strikeouts in this game.

"Even when she returns to her freshman season, she has always had a successful work ethic to succeed," said MHS coach Lorri Lipscomb. "If she wasn't in our practice, she was practicing elsewhere alone.

On the MHS plate, Liz Alsop led with 34 hits and 25 RBIs, including seven home runs. The Mobsters have hit a total of 18 home runs this season.

"This works very well for us," Lipscomb said of her team's strength on the plate. "This allows everyone to relax a little offense and have a better mindset on the plate. It's arguably when we hit rather than trying to protect the plate, we can be more aggressive."

The defending champions Eagles will hold their first game at Lynch Stadium on Monday at 4:00 pm. Game 2 will be through the complex at Mylan Park in ISS Field at 5:00 pm. Game 3 will return to Lynch Stadium Wednesday night if necessary.
