A Kansas City firefighter paramedic was fatally stabbed by a patient taken to a local hospital by an ambulance, officials said.
Graham Hoffman, 29, was carrying a patient when he was stabbed in the chest on Sunday by a regular police medical call, piercing his heart. Despite efforts to save lives, Hoffman died of injuries at North Kansas City Hospital.
Shanetta Bossell, 38, of Kansas City, was charged with murder and armed criminal proceedings, prosecutors said.
First responders received a report from a woman, who was later identified as Bossell, walking on the shoulders of state roads around 12:30 a.m. Sunday, according to court documents. The caller has been worried about her safety.
After Bossell found the location, police requested further treatment for EMT and were taken to St. Luke's Hospital. On the way - around 1:25 a.m. - Bossell allegedly stabbed Hoffman with a knife.
CBS KCTV reported that Bossell was detained and held on $1 million in bonds. If convicted, she will face life in prison.
Bossell was allegedly arrested on April 23 on irrelevant assault charges, according to court documents.
Hoffman has been a member of the Kansas City Fire Department since 2022.
"Graham is a dynamic person who loves life and loves serving the community," said KCFD Fire Chief Ross Grundyson. "He is an excellent caregiver. He treats patients with the highest level of skills and compassion."
Kansas Mayor Quinton Lucas said in a statement that he was "heartbroken" by Hoffman's death.
"Graham is 29 years old and someone is living an extraordinary life in front of him, he passed away, something so influential and important for all of us, serving the community."
The Missouri Department of Fire Safety said in a social media post that Hoffman “is described as a compassionate, caring, loving, and leader in his firefighters and college classmates at work.”
