Their mantra is "purposeful beauty". But the organizer of the Miss World pageant was accused of being totally ugly: "defending and very painful" to one contestant, who had said she was used as a curtain.
Miss England Milla Magee said she agreed to participate in the 2025 World Pageant Miss because she believes it will be a platform to promote her campaign to include CPR into the school curriculum. But she said the reality was completely different.
She left before India’s finals on Saturday, saying she felt she was being exploited and claimed she and other women believed she was being an entertainment activity as an investor, as a “thank you”.
Miss World Organizers responded to a statement that they referred to “false and defamatory statements” and they said “totally unfounded and has nothing to do with her time with us.”
Julia Morley, the group's CEO, further in an interview with The Hindu newspaper, accusing Magee of leaving because she "believed that she had no chance to compete".
On Saturday, Maggie said: "Julia is talking about defensive and very painful things. It's a ridiculous statement. I didn't leave because I thought I thought I wouldn't win.
Maji said there was "a lot of tears behind a smile" at the Miss World event in Hyderabad and she was unwilling to "promote lies". She said that while the pageant was called "purposeful beauty", she found it about "wearing different get-outs and what you look like every day".
She said: "I feel like my false narrative of this system promotes "purposefulness" and it should be about advocacy and what you are pursuing. I think it's a real good opportunity for me to be on the global stage to be able to talk about (my campaign) (my campaign) on the global stage with CPR.
Instead, Magee claims she found she and other contestants still look pretty and can entertain guests with limited opportunities to advance their careers. In one example, she claimed that a man she could not recognize that she walked to her said, “Next time I’m in London or England, hang me,” making her feel uncomfortable.
Maggie also said she felt Miss World exposed her anger at her supporters by posting a statement on social media for them to comment - she said, failed.
She said that despite this, she was “overwhelmed” the message of women participating in the pageant “said they felt exactly the same.”
She called for modernization of the organization, saying: "They have a great responsibility to acknowledge what I said, acknowledge and listen to the reasons why I left, not only so quickly, but unconservatively, saying it was because I don't think I would win."
Miss World has been contacted for comment.
