The Jenkins Creek Fire first reported on May 13, centering about 60 miles north of Duluth near Hoyt Lakes (northwest of Camp House Fire). It tripled its size in the first 24 hours, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office. The northeastern edge of the fire was still "incomplete" as of Wednesday, the Forest Service said.
Camp House Road Fire first reported on May 12 that Duluth is about 45 miles northeast. The sheriff's office reported that more than 150 buildings, including cabins and houses, have since been destroyed. The Forest Service said the fire "begins with private land and moved into land in the national forest system."
"Prioritizing maintenance activities can help protect ecologically meaningful wild rice lakes," Forest Service said Tuesday.
The Munger Shaw fire spread rapidly to about 1,600 acres, first reported on May 12 near Cotton Town. Officials say nearly 100% is now included.
On May 22, the Horse River wildfire was about 35 miles north of Brimson, and was first reported in the wilderness of the border water canoeing area. The Forest Service said the wildfires were fueled by "thick Duff and dead-fighting Metasequoia trees", which complicated the containment efforts.
Visitors are asked to avoid the area between Jack Fish Bay and Chins Wood Falls.
According to the Forest Service, crews of eight firefighters ran into the area earlier this week to investigate the conditions and were retrieved on Wednesday.
