Ministry of Education threatens Columbia University's certification

The Education Department said Wednesday that Columbia University violated federal anti-discrimination laws and therefore failed to meet the certification standards.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Education, the department’s Civil Rights Office notified the Chinese Council for Higher Education (AU) that Columbia is non-compliant.

The department cites President Trump’s executive order on certification standards, accusing the university’s leaders of failing to address anti-Semitism on campus after the Oct. 7 attack on Hamas on Israel.

"In the wake of Hamas' October 7, 2023, the leadership of Columbia University deliberately indifferent to the harassment of Jewish students on campus," Education Secretary Linda McMahon said in a press release.

She noted that the accreditation board “has a huge public responsibility as gatekeepers for federal student aid” and that they “determine which institutions are eligible for federal student loans and Pell grants.” Losing certification will mean that Columbia is not eligible for federal financial aid to students attending the university.

"Given the OCR's determination, it seems that Columbia University no longer meets the board's accreditation standards," the department released.

A CBS spokesman told CBS News that the school is aware of the Ministry of Education’s concerns and “resolved these issues directly with China,” referring to its certified people. The spokesman also said the school is “committed to combat anti-Semitism on our campus” and is “continuing to work with the federal government to resolve the issue.”

The certification team confirmed to CBS News that it received a letter on Wednesday regarding the Ministry of Education in Colombia, but no further comments.

Last month, the Ministry of Education’s Civil Rights Office and the Department of Health and Human Services’ Civil Rights Department determined that Colombia “has failed to meaningfully protect Jewish students from serious and widespread harassment on Colombian campuses and thus denies that these students have equal access to educational opportunities that should be obtained under the law.”

This is a developing story that will be updated.
