Michelle Obama skips Trump inauguration, Barack arrives alone

Former President Barack Obama arrived at the U.S. Capitol on Monday for President-elect Trump's inauguration, without former first lady Michelle Obama in attendance.

Obama was introduced at the ceremony and walked alone into the Capitol for the swearing-in ceremony. Due to the severe cold, the ceremony was moved indoors.

Former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush arrived with their spouses, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former First Lady Laura Bush.

Michelle Obama's absence from the inauguration was not a surprise, as the Obamas issued a statement last week announcing that while the former president would attend, the former first lady would not attend.

The Obamas' statement did not provide a reason for the former first lady's absence from the event. Michelle Obama also skipped former President Jimmy Carter's funeral earlier this month.

One notable moment at Carter's funeral was when Obama and Trump sat together, talking and laughing like old friends despite the political animosity between the Democratic former president and the returning Republican.
