A man suspected of double stabbing was shot dead by armed police in Merseyside.
Merseyside police said officials were asked to report that a man and a woman were stabbed in the Tobruk Road area near Liverpool at 4.25pm on Wednesday.
The force added that armed response officials attended the meeting, the suspect was shot dead by the officer and had been taken to the hospital for treatment.
The men and women who were beaten were also taken to hospitals, where their condition was described as severe but stable, officials said.
Police said an investigation is underway to determine the situation in the Knowsley incident and to block the road.
The officers remained on the scene and conducted House and CCTV inquiries.
The unit said in this case it had notified the Independent Office of Conduct (IOPC) (IOPC), adding that the Watchdog had begun an independent investigation.
Colin Hardy, 54, said he lived about 100 yards from the incident and heard "a lot of screams and shouts" and gunfire.
"It's been a quiet time, and then the police helicopter came over and I could hear the police telling people to go back to their houses," he said.
"I heard what I thought was the sound of gunfire, and then there were four conservative shots and then there was no other sound due to the helicopter."
Residents of Derna Road, which connects to Tobruk Road, said she heard a "combust" in the street.
Kelly Tumbare, 36, said she was "really shocked" when she saw the police arrive.
"I just heard the sirens, so I went out on the street," she said.
“About eight police cars and neighbors and police officers had a lot of commotion on the street.
"Some officers are sticking passages to streets and public behavior. A neighbor was told that he was stabbed."
Tumbare said she saw an air ambulance and police helicopter land approaching, adding that an officer told the residents of Dena Road to stay indoors.
Det Supt Paul Speight said: “I know people living in the wider community of Huyton and Merseyside will be shocked by the incident.
“We are still in the early stages of the investigation and part of our initial inquiry will be to determine the full picture of what happened.
“At the same time, I want to assure the public that the Merseyside Police is committed to ensuring the safety of our communities and that we take all reports of incidents involving weapons very seriously.
“It was an isolated incident and we were not looking for anyone else. All three were taken to the hospital for various injuries for assessment.
“IOPC will now conduct an independent investigation and we will fully collaborate on their investigation in the coming days and weeks.”
"We have begun investigating an incident that was shot and shot in Houton by Merseyside police," an IOPC spokesman said.
