Georgia Tech head coach Danny Hall said earlier this week that the ideal plan is to have Oxford 3-0, with the jacket being one-third there after a 9-2 victory against Western Kentucky on Friday afternoon.
Tech (41-17) got a huge offensive effort from Alex Hernandez, and Tate McKee was awesome on the mound, scoring a huge playoff game in the Oxford area opening game at Swayze Field on the Olele Miss campus.
"Just a great way to start the game. I think it's huge for us," Hall said. "Tate really squeezed a little bit of jam in the first inning, and then Alex's huge three-inning home run was just to get us on the board. Then, the game got great. Tate was amazing... He kept pitching when he had to be with the guys at the base.
McGee won a 7-3 win, thanks to seven innings as he allowed 1 hit and 7 hits and six strikeouts and 2 walks. He threw 113 balls and got rid of jam several times, including some huge courts in the seventh inning as he limited Western Kentucky (46-13) to one game and stranded twice to keep the Jacket’s lead at 5-1 at the time.
"Matt (Taylor) entered there for the seventh time and said you got the last two guys in eight and nine holes, eight got hit and nine holes appeared. And I took it out. "It's fun, sure. Yes, I definitely run on adrenaline. If I knew I was 110 (court), I probably didn't want to know that, but yes, this is how I've been running on adrenaline all the time. I know, I know this is the key to the seventh time. The weekend is definitely the key. ”
“I need some adrenaline,” Hall joked.
After McKee got rid of the first and third jam without causing any damage on the top of the first jam, his offense quickly placed him under a 3-0 lead, while Alex Hernandez connected with the 3-2 court to send it to the field wall in the right center for three home runs.
Georgia Tech added another game to the bottom of the second game as Drew Rogers brought Carson Kerce home, centering on Sac Fly, making it 4-0. Kerce reached out to lead the game in two directions as Hilltoppers' right fielder lost a high-altitude ball in the sun.
Georgia Tech added another sixth time in Kerce's RBI Bunt singles to make it 5-0, but the jacket put it on the inning base because they can't add more.
Western Kentucky pooled the biggest threat in the seventh inning as Reid Howard had a RBI single that brought home the first inning at the top of the hill, but with only one runner in the first and second, McKee was able to fly left and the distance was left, with a brief loss limiting it to one shot and hit the second half with a technically leading 5-1.
The Jacket added another game in the seventh inning as a throw from Western Kentucky escaped as Vahn Lackey encountered a mistake in the game Vahn Lackey dropped to get Kyle Lodise to the plate from second to get it 6-1.
After Ballard was able to leave the situation with no further damage and retained the lead of the 6-2 jacket, the Captain of the Hilltop answered in the first place of Ballard, the eighth jacket's reliefist. Ballard finished two innings and made two hits with three hits.
Georgia Tech got an exclamation mark at the bottom of the eighth place as Hernandez crushed his second afternoon three home runs to make it 9-2. Hernandez won a 5-5 match with two home runs and six RBI wins in his first NCAA Championship.
"I'm not sure how many courts there are (to Alex), but that's a lot of balls." The ball didn't fly out of here today, so hit the batsman... I mean that's the bolts. ”
"It feels like another game," Hernandez added after his first NCAA Championship. "Obviously, that means more, but just want to go out and not put too much pressure on it and think about it and try to do too much. Treat it like every other game."
Tech's Kerce and Kent Schmidt both had multiple hits with Hernandez, while Kyle Lodise scored two hits and two scores. Rogers was also hit and hit.
Drew Whalen lost 9-3 in Kentucky Western Conference season. Hilltoppers also used rescuers Taylor Penn, Treyson Peters and Zach Lyles.
Howard, Camden Ross and Ethan Lizama are three Western Kentucky batsmen, with multiple hits, and Ross' knock on the door was doubles. Hayes and Howard have only two RBIs.
Georgia Tech will play the game between Ole Miss and Murray State on Saturday at 6pm/5pm Central on Friday night.
Hall said after the victory that his intuition told him that the jacket would stick to a normal weekend rotation, meaning Brady Jones would get a Saturday start, with everyone else resting, including the annual semifinalist Patel, except for McKee and Ballard.
Western Kentucky will play the game's loser in the knockout round Saturday at 2pm/1pm.
