Grand Theft Auto 6 - one of the most eagerly awaited releases of all time - has been postponed until May 2026.
A sequel to the documentary video game series by developer Rockstar Games will be released on consoles later this year.
But it tells fans that it takes extra time to “delive at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”
The last GTA 5 game in the series is the second best-selling video game ever, and it is still very popular thanks to its online mode.
Since the game's trailer was released in December 2023, there has been little official information about the GTA 6, and it has quickly reached 100m views.
The 90-second clip reveals two main protagonists and gives a glimpse of the game's fictional, Florida-style scenes Leonida.
Rockstar said in the statement that the “interest and excitement” in the game is “real humility to our entire team.”
Since the release of the GTA 5, the company is known for its long-term development cycle, which is a 12-year gap.
It also has a record of delaying major releases, such as the 2018 Red Dead Redemption 2-Studio's last new game.
But Rockstar is also known for its perfectionist approach, with parent company CEO Straus Zelnick coming up with two interactives, which has previously said that every new game from developers “needs something you’ve never seen before.”
News of the delay has been in trouble with 27-year-old fans including Dienne Kawende.
He told BBC Newsbeat: "I'm absolutely angry now."
"Now there is fire running through my body."
GTA 6 is only available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox on startup, meaning owners of older consoles will need to upgrade to play it.
Sony and Microsoft recently announced prices for the two machines.
"This year, I literally got a job, just to save it to get the PlayStation 5," Dean said.
"Now everything is ruined."
Although he praised Rockstar for making "amazing" and complex games, the 12-year wait was too much for him for him.
"I'm really impatient right now," he said.
“When GTA 5 came out, I was in school. I was a teenager. I might have a baby soon.
“I didn’t even have time to play GTA 6 when it came out.”
GTA 6 is expected to break sales records at launch, which could surpass its predecessor, the highest-grossing video game of all time.
Over the past two years, the global video game industry has been hit by studio closures and layoffs.
Hopefully the new Rockstar launch may inspire more people to buy new consoles, or drive interest in gaming more broadly.
However, this does mean that other publishers who are concerned about a conflict with GTA 6 may release their new game by the end of the year.
