Mason Howell may not finish in high school, but he will head to the 2025 U.S. Open.
The 17-year-old high school student from Georgia, who scored tickets on the 125th PGA Tour professional tickets in the outstanding qualifiers.
Howell competed in the U.S. Open qualifiers at the Piedmont Driving Club in Atlanta and was stormy during Monday's course. This day is called "the longest day in golf" because players have to play two rounds of golf in a day, although that's not a problem for Howell.
He finished first in the qualifying match with 18 under par in the day, shooting 63 in both rounds. Even more impressive is that he did not have a bogey during the day. He won the championship in the 5-public 18-game, including 2007 Masters champion Zach Johnson.
Only the top five scored in Atlanta made it to the U.S. Open, and Howell now has high motivation to get into Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania.
Howell, 17, of Thomasville, Georgia, has become one of the young golfers. He is currently a junior at Brookwood High School outside Atlanta and plans to graduate in 2026. Although he is one year away from graduation, he has promised to play at the University of Georgia.
The Tallahassee Democrat, part of USA Today Cyber, first won a golf club at the age of three in July 2022 and has competed since he was six.
“Tournament golf has always been a big part of my life,” Howell said at the time. “I encourage kids to start playing golf and play because it’s one of the greatest sports you can play.”
Last month, he was part of the Boys Golf team, which won the Georgia championship, the fourth championship the program has won in five years. Even more impressive, Howell won a low-level medal winner in the state championship game and won honors in the playoffs.
Howell is currently ranked eighth in the Boys American Youth Golf Association rankings, but he reached No. 496 for amateurs on Monday. In his amateur career, he won the 2023 Billy Horschel Junior Championship and finished 11 top ten in his young career. He also won the Future Masters Championship in Alabama in 2023.
The 2025 U.S. Open will be Howell's first major event. It happened from June 12 to 15.
