NEW YORK - Martin Scorsese is a documentary produced by Pope Francis that will document the collaboration between the late Pope and the film in the global educational movement established before his death.
"Aldeas - A New Story" will feature a conversation between Pope Francis and Scorsese, which includes what the filmmaker says is the Pope's final in-depth camera interview with the film. The documentary will detail the work of Scholas Iccontrenentes, a nonprofit international organization founded by the Pope in 2013, aims to promote a "culture of encounters" among young people.
Part of the organization's work includes making movies under the Aldeas initiative. The documentary will be for young people who participated in Aldeas and produced short films to Indonesia, Italy and the Gambia.
The Aldeas Scholas film, which announced the documentary on Wednesday and Sikelia Productions, Sikelia Productions of Scorsese, said the film “proves a lasting belief that creativity is not only a way of expression, but a pathway to hope and transformation.”
Before his death, Pope Francis called Aldeas “a very poetic and constructive project because it originates from the roots of human life, human sociality, human conflict…the nature of the journey of life.”
The film has no release date announced.
"Now, we need to talk to each other and listen to each other across cultures," Scorsese said in a statement. "One of the best ways to achieve this is to share stories of who we are, reflected in our personal lives and experiences. It helps us understand and value how each of us see the world. It is important to provide people around the world with respect while retaining their cultural identity, and Cinema is the best medium."
Scorsese has met Pope Francis many times over the years, and their conversations are sometimes done by the 82-year-old filmmaker on "the last temptation of Christ" and "silence." After meeting with Pope Francis in 2023, Scorsese announced that he would make another Jesus-centric film, although the project (adapted to Shūsaku Endō's "Life of Jesus") has not yet entered production. Last fall, Scorsese produced an eight-part documentary series for Fox Nation called "The Saints".
Francis died on April 21 and plans to begin the meeting to elect the new pope on May 7.
