Three years ago, Mandy Patinkin and Kathryn Grody filmed a real-life marriage version of the scripted comedy for the pilot based on scripted comedy (loosely). Now, after Showtime's network restructuring, cancellation and industry-wide strike, they brought the project to the Tribeca Festival with the show's co-creator Gideon Grody-Patinkin (their son) and Ewen Wright in the hopes of finding a reliable buyer in the end. The actors know they are against an industry that is still struggling to find their foothold, but, they can’t help but point out that they are against time, too. "We really hope to have this show there soon," Patingkin said. "Around the corner." The couple is with thr Reflect before the festival SeasoningThe long and difficult road to the screen and explains why they are so passionate about making it work. "And I just think the cultural exams are insufficient for couples of our age," Grody said. "I wish I lived long enough to share with others."
Can you talk about your journey to this show since filming the pilot?
like We started with the green light from Showtime, but for economic reasons they need to cancel it. They did the same thing with Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa's performances, which was much more expensive than our productions, and there were several other shows. I was told at the time that it was a pandemic and strikes, etc. Our executive, Gary Levine, is a big fan and I know he feels bad about it. He offered to help us as much as possible, but we decided to wait until the strike ended and everything calmed down, but then it was obvious that the business was reversed during this period. I have a lot of friends trying to get financing for various projects.
You can only shoot the pilot, but the rest of the series is ready to shoot?
like Showtime was a great collaborator in the process and they decided to do this piece (we will bring to Tribeca) as a pilot. The other five episodes are like I haven't seen or read before - not only on TV. Gideon and Ewen take us into the wild adventures we imagined. I really like that we didn't act like cute little older people, which could be so patronized. It's like people grow and grow, and then they get to the moments when they lose.
castle It really goes with what we usually see in older people: lying on the floor and saying, “Help me, help me!”
What are you looking for in a distributor?
like People we can form partnerships with. We have structured it to make it affordable. It doesn't waste money at all. I won't say their names, but I've done that suggests that the cost per day is one million dollars. I think this is unreasonable. This show is morally budgeted for the climate we live in. I lost my mind because I was 72 years old so I didn't know where I was going.
castle I'm six years old, but I can bother. We were so excited when it was initially green because it felt like the perfect timing, but we wanted there to be a primitive, creative person out there to see its essence.
like When I'm on top homeso unusual is that it is the right chemical reaction. We made a great product where everyone listened to each other, including people from the network and studio. We will all have dinner together! This is a beautiful arrangement and not happens every day. But let me know: I mainly want to sell this show so we can on the cover AARP Magazine.
Have you watched the show or read the script that gives you a new look at anything about your relationship?
castle When we first met, if we had a fight, I thought, “Okay, we’re not married”, so I appreciate our longevity in new ways, and now how we know each other enough to be able to express all kinds of emotions to each other and keep moving forward. Some people think that long-term married couples are boring, but my husband never bored me. once. This episode shows that we can still be surprised by each other.
like Gideon knows us like a book, and his dear friend Ewen knows us well. What they fully realize is our insanity. We're fucking crazy. Two people like us can even have a dinner together, let alone 47 years, which is almost unimaginable. But they witnessed our indestructible, almost unconscious commitment to our love for each other. As my voice man for years said, “You two are destined to be together.”
