Police in Mumbai, India, detain man suspected of wielding knife attack According to media reports, Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan
Khan was stabbed during a scuffle with an unidentified man at his residence on Thursday morning. The actor is recovering from surgery.
Police have seized CCTV footage from the actor's residence in an upscale Bandra neighborhood and initial reports suggest the attack may have been a theft.
It was unclear whether the man in custody was an intruder.
The BBC has reviewed a statement given to police by a nurse who worked at Khan's home, which provided some details of what happened on the night of the incident.
Eliyama Philip, who cared for Khan's son, said she first noticed a man's shadow near the bathroom door late at night while she was in the child's room with the nanny.
Ms Phillip said a man was holding a wooden object in one hand and a long blade in the other and warned the pair not to make any noise. She said he demanded 10 million rupees ($115,477; £94,511).
A scuffle soon broke out and Ms. Philip was injured in the conflict. Meanwhile, the nanny fled the room.
According to the nurse, Khan and his wife, actress Kareena Kapoor, rushed to the room after hearing the commotion. She said when Khan confronted him, the attacker struck him with a blade and then fled the house.
Khan suffered multiple injuries in the attack, including injuries to the back of his neck.
Dr. Nitin Dange of Lilavati Hospital, where Khan was being treated, said that when Khan arrived, his spine was bleeding and had knife fragments embedded in it. The fragment was surgically removed and the fluid leakage was controlled. Doctors say serious spinal damage can be avoided with prompt treatment.
Dr. Dange said on Friday that Khan was "doing much better now."
"We got him walking and he's walking fine. Judging from his parameters, wounds and all other injuries, he can be safely transferred out of the intensive care unit. He has to take some precautions. He has to rest and move Limit for a week,” he said.
Mumbai Deputy Commissioner of Police Dixit Gadam said the weapon used in the attack has not been found and a complaint has been lodged based on the nurse's statement.
"The defendant used a fire escape to gain entry," he said. "Investigations are ongoing to determine how the door to the house was opened or how the intruder gained entry."
Khan, 54, is also a producer and has appeared in a number of films and TV shows over the years. He was known for his wit and humorous timing.
His portrayal of the villain in 2006's critically acclaimed "Omkara" received widespread praise. He has received several awards, including the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honor, in 2010.
Khan is the son of former Indian cricket captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and actor Sharmila Tagore.
