Police in the Indian city of Mumbai have arrested a man suspected of attacking Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan with a knife last week.
Khan is one of India's most famous stars stabbed An intruder broke into his home in an attack that shocked the nation. He is recovering from surgery.
On Sunday, police said they arrested the main suspect, Mohammad Sharif Islam Shehzad, adding that he was a Bangladeshi citizen living in India illegally.
Shehzad's lawyers deny the accusations and say he is not Bangladeshi.
Police said they arrested Shehzad from Thane district in suburban Mumbai.
Dixit Gedam, deputy commissioner of police in Mumbai, told a news conference that preliminary evidence showed that he came to the city about six months ago and worked in a domestic agency using a fake name and identity card .
Ghedam said police suspected Shehzad of breaking into Khan's home with the intention of robbing him.
On Sunday, a Mumbai court sentenced Mr. Shehzad to five days of police custody.
His lawyer Sandeep Shikhane tell reporters His clients were used as "scapegoats."
"There is no documentary evidence that he is a Bangladeshi citizen," he said.
The attack on Khan made national headlines and raised questions about safety and security in Mumbai, one of India's most populous cities and its financial capital.
Khan was attacked at his home in an upscale neighborhood and stabbed six times and suffered multiple injuries, including one to the back of his neck.
Eliyama Philip, a nurse who worked at Khan's home, told police last week that she first noticed the shadow of a man near the bathroom door late at night while she was in her child's room with her nanny.
Ms Phillip said a man was holding a wooden object in one hand and a long blade in the other and warned the pair not to make any noise. She said he demanded 10 million rupees ($115,477; £94,511).
A scuffle broke out and Ms. Philip was injured. She also said that after hearing the commotion, Khan and his wife rushed to the room and the attacker attacked the actor with a razor blade before running away.
On Friday, investigators reportedly detained - At least five other people were subsequently released for questioning in connection with the investigation.
A number of men were detained because of their resemblance to the attacker, who was captured on CCTV cameras leaving the building.
