Good morning. It began. People have voted in the 2025 local elections. They are just England, with about 1,600 council seats going to snap up (in other years, there were over 8,000 seats in England alone), so in some ways it was a series of local elections. But you will never find a political commentator willing to say elections don’t matter, and there’s a lot to be excited about this year. This is partly because it is the first election test since the general election since Labor (the modern era of the popularity of no council collapse, as John Curtice pointed out this week). But mainly because bipartisan politics has collapsed, five parties are now competitive in England, and the rise of British reform means that a readjustment of rights is already happening. These elections will show the development of the process.
Today, people vote for:
-
There are more than 1,600 members of the 14 county councils, eight unified authorities, a metropolitan council and in the mean island.
-
Six mayors - Two of them were the regional mayors who won the last labor victory (Western England, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough), two of them were the first elections (General elections in Greater Lincolnshire, Hull and East Yorkshire), two of them were the mayors who won the last labor, and were the mayors who won the last labor (Doncaster and North North shorts and North types and North types, north types types, tynes types, tynes types).

There is usually not much happening on the voting day itself. But we always have dogs at the polling station.
And there may be some non-election politics. This is the agenda of the day.

After 10:30 am: Commons head Lucy Powell asked questions about the Commons business next week.

If you would like to contact me, post a message below the line when you open a comment (usually between 10am and 3pm currently) or send me a message on social media. I can't read all messages for BTL, but if you put "Andrew" into the message targeting me, I'm more likely to see it because I search for posts containing the word.
If you want to come up with something urgently, it is better to use social media. You can contact me on Bluesky at @andrewsparrowgdn.bsky.social. The Guardian gave up the release of its official account on X, but the personal Guardian is there, I still have my account and if you message me at @AndrewSparrow I'll see it and respond if necessary.
I find this very helpful when readers point out errors, even smaller typos. No errors are too small to correct. I also found your question interesting too. I can't promise to reply to them all, but I'll try to reply to BTL or sometimes in the blog.
