LIV Golf signs TV deal with Fox Sports, leaving The CW

Liv Golf is leaving The CW in a new multi-year rights deal with Fox Sports.

It's a major upgrade in broadcast coverage for the upstart golf league, which is backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.

LIV said more than half of its schedule will be televised on the Fox Broadcast Network or Fox Sports 1, with some games also being televised on FS2 and Fox Business Network. LIV Golf will continue to produce its own events and have its own broadcast team. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The addition of Fox Business Network as a LIV channel also pushes sports programming into previously unexplored areas of the Fox portfolio. FBN has also simulcast "Fox Weather" in recent months.

as hollywood reporter noted last year that there is a push to bring sports programming to an increasing number of cable channels to keep them "essential" to pay-TV bundles.

LIV was created as a competitor to the PGA Tour and has attracted many top golfers to its stable with guaranteed deals worth tens of millions of dollars or more. However, it has struggled to gain a foothold in the United States due to the reluctance of its current PGA TV partner to sign on.

LIV reached this agreement with The CW two years ago, which not only allows LIV to enter the field of television broadcasting, but also promotes the entry of Nexstar-owned channels into the field of live sports.

The PGA and LIV have since agreed to merge, although the deal is far from complete and both parties are working out logistical issues.

"We are excited to partner with Fox Sports, one of the world's preeminent broadcast networks," said Scott O'Neil, CEO of LIV Golf. "LIV Golf is getting bigger and bolder, and this relationship marks the next phase of growth as our league joins the ranks of the nation's top sports leagues and conferences. Jordan Bazant, Executive Vice President, Fox Sports Network, added: “Fox Sports Network is excited to broadcast the LIV Golf League and showcase top athletes competing at the elite level to a national audience.
