Litigation accused Byron Scott of sexually assaulting teenagers in 1987

LOS ANGELES - A woman is suing former Los Angeles Lakers player and coach Byron Scott for accusing him of sexually assaulting her in her high school game in 1987 when he was only 15.

The lawsuit was first filed in December 2022 and was revised on May 1, accusing Scoe of assault and false imprisonment. Scott, 64, worked hard to take his name from court documents, but the judge denied that his request was only identified as "John Doe". The revised complaint was publicly named him for the first time.

According to court documents, the Lakers were on a visit to the Lakers when the plaintiff was taking a summer class in Campbell Hall Heights in Los Angeles, “sexed by Byron Scott in the closet of a locked janitor in the high school gym.” Scott was a Lakers player at the time.

The lawsuit was filed in 2022 under a California law that temporarily allows for the filing of old cases against minors. The law requires defendants to remain anonymous until certain thresholds are crossed.

Scott's attorney Linda Bauermeister said her client did not deny having sexual contact, but insisted that he thought the girl was of legal age.

"Our clients were shocked by the complaint," Bauermeister said in a statement Wednesday. "Our clients believed the plaintiff was over 18 and did not know she would claim it 35 years later. He respected girls and women and his claims blinded him and his family."

Scott married his first wife, Anita Scott, at the time of the alleged attack. They have three children and divorced in 2014.

The alleged attack occurred in the summer of 1987, when the Lakers were filming teaching basketball videos at the gym at school and meeting students, parents and faculty members, the lawsuit alleged.

The judge ruled last August that Scott could be identified, and last week, the plaintiff's attorney filed an amended complaint, named him.

The lawsuit also named Campbell Hall High School, accusing school officials of not protecting the girl. It requires a jury to conduct a trial and demand more than $25,000 in damages, including lost income and attorney fees paid by Scott and the school. A message was sent to school officials Wednesday asking for comment on the lawsuit.

Scott was a shooting guard who won NBA titles in 1985, 1987 and 1988, part of the Lakers’ “Showtime” era. He led the team with a career-high 21.7 points in 1987-88.

Scott also played for the Indiana Pacers and then the Wonder Grizzlies before returning to the Lakers for the 1996-97 season, his last player. Scott later became the head coach of Kobe Bryant and the Lakers.

From 1998 to 2016, he coached in the NBA, including head coaches with the Lakers. He is currently coaching in the Philippines.

Scott married Cece Gutierrez, who appeared on the "Basketball Wife" reality show.

The Associated Press does not usually name people who accused of sexual assault.
